Doesn't sound promising for GaSt. Numbers just aren't there to make it work.
“We can sell Turner Field right now,” Reed said in a sit-down with local reporters Thursday morning.
Atlanta has received two to four offers on the 77-acre property, he said, declining to give specifics. He acknowledged, however, that he’s been in conversation with Georgia State University officials and said the nearby school “has some interest” in the land.
How does that not add up

I see nothing overly troubling about that article. Sure the mayor is going to try to make himself look good by saying he has plenty of potential buyers (no more than four according to the article, which isn't that impressive) and huge plans for making the area more attractive.
The reality is that GSU is the only institution that could feasibly do anything productive with that property.
Not saying it's even close to a done deal for the University, but both the city of Atlanta and GSU need this to happen.

You know... I had someone call on this used car this morning. It won't last long. I have had 4 offers, and one was even German. You better act fast. Make you a deal, if you pay cash today... I'll knock of 10% just because I like you. Even throw in a new set of tires.
If Mayor Reed has 4 offers ready to go, my name is Big Enos Burdette.

Considering the location of that property, it's not really that difficult to imagine having offers already. I think it's more people hoping that's not the case than anything.

Sounds like you are saying GaSt will get the property. I am saying they won't. Not a big deal, but we will see who is right in the end. If GaSt was averaging 30k in attendance and could put the stadium to use, the odds would be much better. The other factor working against it is the fact you have a brand new billion stadium you can use. Not a bad option.

I think it is probably a good fit, but I don't believe Ga State has or can get the money to make it happen. That is the problem.

Exactly. This is Becker and Reed negotiating in the press. There were no viable offers for 30 years WITH the Braves there, There certainly arent any now.

The location of the property is why there aren't any offers. Mechanicsville, Summerhill, Peoplestown, University Heights, Lakewood, Federal Terrace, Thomasville Heights? Name places that dont appear at the top of new housing starts lists?

We have problems out the ying yang. Money isnt one. Besides no one entity will get this done. The city, GSU and private developers will have to work together. The area is too big. The most likely scenario is athletic facilities and maybe some classrooms surrounded by retail, apartments and condos. Think College Town at FSU.
But there will be some negotiating in the press especially about the main point, the stadium

I don't think there is a firm plan but additional dorms near athletic fields is not the worst idea.

I don't mean this as a dig at Ga State at all (This time :) ), but when you have problems getting the funds together for a spring game I think you gotta believe money will be an issue. Couple that with the fact student fees are tops in the state and I also understand Ga State has the most bonds in the state as well, money is and will be tight.
Also, comparing College Town at FSU to what you guys need I am not sure is a fair comparison. FSU has 40k+ students that are mostly living on or around campus. Yes Ga State has 30k+ students but the majority of these are commuters if I am not mistaken. I just don't see the demand for a college town type atmosphere at Ga State.

Regarding our AD mismanagement, that is not where that money would come from. We have plenty of money outside the athletic budget. $1.5B in current projects. $7B in real estate holdings.
Regarding the students on campus. We have over 4000 students living on campus in dorms. There is a very long waiting list and the plan goal is 40k students with 20% on campus or that is 8000. There are also a huge number of students living off but around campus. No longer the 1980's with students al commuting from Fayeteville and Norcross. Ironically one of the biggest areas where students off campus live is the Grant Park, Summerhill area just east and northeast of Turner Field. By the way Hizzonner was in Tallahassee touring College Town just a few weeks before the Braves announced they were moving.

LOL. Just because Ga Southern is broke doesn't mean every other state school is broke. If there's mutual interest, Ga State will get it done.

With the streetcar coming online up Edgewood and the new life it's bringing to the Old Fourth Ward, you'll see an even larger influx of students move into that neighborhood (part of campus is technically in the Old Forth Ward, and it's already got a ton of "off campus" students living in it). Along with that, there are two new private dorms that are considered off campus housing (as they aren't owned by the school), meaning that the amount of students actually living on campus is actually a lot higher than the 4000 in official GSU dorms. It's already probably closer to 7 or 8k.

I'm sorry. I can't take you seriously. It sounds like you are implying the street car was a good idea.
