Meanwhile EKU continues with what they need to do
I can understand the animosity of WKU folks who are opposed to EKU, probably feel threatened.
I recall visiting the WKU campus back in 1995 while I was stationed at Ft. Campbell Ky
I remember how their stadium looked then, and it wasn't an architectural marvel either. I hope the Colonels do get an invite, better EKU than Liberty or UMass.
I'd rather have EKU, ugly stadium and all than a pristine LU.

RE: Meanwhile EKU continues with what they need to do
I have thought that EKU was ultimately the answer for the SBC eastern add for some time.
-It has the size and almost perfect geographic location for the SBC (and App State).
-It has good FCS playoff caliber football and has shown an ability to fill it's stadium (24,000 WKY 2004) when the competition was exciting, which should be the case most of the time in FBS.
-It has a perennial top 100 RPI men's basketball program. That has to be huge.
-It is in a very good television market (63).

Some negatives have been posted.
The football stadium may not be the best, but it DOES meet FBS capacity requirements right now.
The EKU athletic budget, while small is still a bit larger than that of GaSo, and Southern has done just fine.

IMO, the SBC should add UMass in the short term for football only; for the instant ccg, and then add EKU for the eastern long term program.
With it's continued success in mbb; UConn's longevity in the AAC is very suspect, and likely UMass replaces them in a few years.

Yeah, was thinking UConn's basketball success may very well aid UMass.

Without UConn in the AAC, there's no reason to stay in New England. I think Marshall might be more of a candidate to provide Temple/Navy/Cincy with a rival.

Marshall fans claim adamantly that they will never move to the AAC.
The AAC rules would not allow them their special program that enrolls certain special needs athletes and of bringing in certain football, basketball and others that do not meet the AAC requirements. They claim it would devastate their athletic programs.

There is no rivalry between the two schools. I think they would be a fine addition to the SBC. You should grab them. They would present you with no problems.

I agree the Massachusetts would be for the short term, because the Big 12 will at some point take Cincinnati and perhaps UCONN or Memphis and UMASS will get the call up. EKU is a better option than JMU in case there is still not enough votes for a Liberty invite. There'd be less opposition to EKU.

Would EKU take an Olympic sports membership with a football inclusion promised. The next football spot being theirs pairing them with UMASS.

UMASS...like Idaho don't need to be paired with anyone since they would be football only members. EKU would be paired with Appalachian State.

I see NMSU moving to SBC as full member, Massachusetts as football only, Missouri State as full member and either Liberty or EKU as a travel partner to Appalachian State. JMU will wait for a MAC invite.

Looks like
http://www.easternprogress.com/2014/04/0...ompromise/

the K & Y legislature approved the $15M bonds and paid for through existing revenue streams for athletic facilities improvements with the intent to "try and raise $15M in private donations to match the state's allocation."
Best case scenario looks like $20-30M in athletic improvement funds given the degree to which private contributions come through.

UMass won't even be available for the Sun Belt until 2016. Unless if James Madison or Missouri State say they want in, this is EKU's spot to lose.

And yes, EKU:Eastern Kentucky :: USF:South Florida. It may be true in the broadest sense of the term if you only divide each state in half, but to most Kentuckians Eastern Kentucky is everything east of Berea (which does not include EKU). WKU is the same way - it technically is in the western half of the state, but the Bowling Green area is referred to as South Central or even Southern Kentucky.

If Kentucky had to do it all over, EKU would be in Morehead (Morehead State), and WKU in Murray (Murray State).

RE: Meanwhile EKU continues with what they need to do
EKU and WKU. No matter where you draw the line perhaps, the names are a misnomer. However when established years ago, if you drew a line thru the middle of KY, one was in the east the other in the west. Now, my issue with the Liberty guy was his contention that some how '"that region" he refers to, and I am assuming he is talking about Appalachia, the extreme eastern part of KY, which is poverty stricken, and is not where EKU is located. But he says EKU, should be serving those students needs not attempting to move to FBS. He even made reference that EKU was the university located in the most eastern part of KY, which is not correct ( that would be Morehead State, Alice Lloyd College, and U Pike). But enough about KY geography
As far as stadium upgrades, after the 15 million, which will be shared with a few projects, Dr. Benson specifically said 30 million for upgrades to Roy Kidd Stadium.

Looks to me like EKU needs to get some butts in the seats at football games! How fo you move to FBS with a home game average of 8,600?

That's more than twice that of FBS/MAC's Eastern Michigan who averaged 4,051 last year and CUSA's UAB wasn't much better at 10,548.

The excitement of going FBS and a little marketing should get them there.

San Jose State 2 years ago was averaging... 10k/game. And they are a MWC team.

8,600 at FCS is not great, but an FBS invite with schools that fans have heard of would easily help increase that.

Not as a travel partner but paired as in adding two who work as one. UTA, UALR are IDAHO and NMSU Olympic partners in a way. Twelve teams for Olympic or football gives EKU a promise to fundraise with . Time to make what ever improvements are needed. UMASS already being FBS and stadium construction currently going on helps the situation.

RE: Meanwhile EKU continues with what they need to do
Just returned from a 3-day trip to Richmond taking care of my father; drove through the campus a couple of times and past the stadium on multiple occasions. I had forgotten how much room there is behind the visitors' stands - looks like a small practice field there now, so the option to replicate the home-side stands on the visitor side is definitely within the boundaries of the available space. They'd probably need to work a deal with the battery company to lease parking space on game day, but I can't see that as a roadblock.

The campus looks great, very busy, and the town already has the infrastructure to accommodate 2-3K visiting fans. Given the growth of the Richmond/Berea area I can see a good, non-student local fan draw with some better FB teams coming to town. I say get 'er done. They'd make a great addition to the SBC.

Check out WKU attendance before they went FBS. Sorry to stir this pot, the games prior to moving where they drew more than 15,000 were against EKU.
Back to EKU. Many of our fans and alumni have steadily lost interest as the OVC has lost members such as WKU and MTSU and is becoming a basketball conference, even some of the members call it that ( Murray Stare for one). And adding some of the schools that have joined in the last 5 years are basketball only. And who gets excited about a game with UT Martin?
Last years attendance was not good. It would have been a little more respectable, but homecoming, more than half the crowd stayed in the parking lot or left before the game started because of a monsoon rainstorm. Still, most believe that we are stagnant in the OVC, better competition and a chance to play some old rivals, MTSU, Marshall and recognizable teams we have played before, Ga So and App Stare are two of those.
It seems to me that EKU is a better choice than a start up team that does not even field a team at this point ( some that have been mentioned on here, Kennesaw State, Mercer... And please Northern Ky U, they are even talking about football?).

Not necessarily.
Scheduling commits UMass for 2014, but it could indeed be available for 2015.
The MAC might be willing to reduce or even waive exit fees, or the SBC might be willing to, assist.
UMass might even be willing to pay the fuill fee.

In any event, UMass could be available in 2015.
