That's a good hire for Marquette and will help keep some of the Big East shine in place.
Wellman needs to step up his game and soon.

Not sure what the line of thinking is on Kevin Stallings. He has been successful at Vandy. Why would he move to a less successful school in a better conference?

Stallings should be in the NCAA tourney every year coaching in the SEC. I think it's a red flag that he's been there that long and still has struggling teams.

I would have to assume that Wellman had a pretty good idea he would be looking for a coach this year, and that Howland was high on his list. I think he made a major strategic mistake not signing him to a contract before the season was over. He could have helped his friend Bzdelic by allowing him the face saving measure of announcing a month ago that he would resign at the end of the season, freeing up Wake to get a head start on the coaching carousel. In exchange, Wake could have quietly given Buzz a severance package to ease the blow.
Instead, Wake now finds itself in an uncomfortable position. By pursuing some high profile targets in a relatively public way, if they now have to start fishing in the shallow end for a second tier coach they could have had from day one, they come across as a little pathetic. Ask NC State what that feels like.

This is from ESPN today.
BTW Norwood Teague is a Carolina grad and former assistant AD at Chapel Hill (IIRC he is the current AD at Minn.). Smart has ACC history and currently recruits in the ACC footprint.
I would think that Wellman would want someone younger than Howland.

Howland is 56. Those are prime years from a coaching perspective. They can get at least 10 years out of that. I'd still prefer Smart though.

Well the same source that said Howland was all but a done deal to Marquette is now saying Shaka is all but a done deal to Marquette. Not sure what's going on there. Beyond the fact that they don't have an AD or president at the moment and are leaking rumors like a sieve.
Good news is Marquette can't take both Shaka and Howland so one of them will still be available even if Marquette makes their hire first. If Shaka goes there, it will be interesting to see if we immediately try to lock up Howland or try Gregg Marshall first.
Even if we "end up fishing in the shallow end of the pool" for a candidate, I don't really see the big deal. It makes for message board fodder for opposing fans but has no real effect on the program.
I'm hoping Masiello holds out for something better than USF and is still available if we miss on our higher end candidates. Some indications that Florida assistant John Pelphrey might get that job.

CBS is now talking about Chris Mack (Xavier) as a candidate for the Wake job. Mack was a former assistant under Skip Prosser at Wake Forest.

Chris Mack would be a very weak hire, IMO. He lost a ton of respect from the whole region of Ohio and Mick gained a ton by how the each handle the post fight saga completely opposite as the other did. He's a low character dude with average knowledge of the game.

" He was previously an assistant under Skip Prosser at Wake Forest from 2001 to 2004, at which point the now 44-year-old developed relationships with several influential boosters. Sources told CBSSports.com that some of those boosters are now endorsing the candidacy of Mack, who is widely viewed as one of the top young coaches in college basketball."
The source on that is Mit Shah. He's a high dollar booster for Wake and is best friends with Chris Mack. Mack is on the candidate list that's been circulated, but Mit could be throwing his name out there now to get his buddy a raise. We'll see how legit that rumor is over the next few days. If it turns out to be true, Mack will be our third head coach from Xavier.

Ben Howland or Shaka Smart for Marquette? Talk about complete opposite philosophies, haha. I'd really love those Howland vs. Bo Ryan match-ups pause not.

Masiello reported to have agreed to take USF job.

Nice contract as well 5 years at 6.2 million to boot. Im sure Masiello will do well there, and I definitely see him pulling some of those New Yorkers down there. Good luck Massy for you might have a down year to start, but I have a feeling come year two you will have it rolling in the right direction.

Do you not need a degree at Louisville to be an assistant coach for I thought that was a requirement? Surely we looked into this before hiring him for he was an assistant at Manhattan before he cam to Louisville. So what gives on this for he has gotten jobs before without a degree WHY so picky now???

George O'Leary got away with the same thing for years. Surprisingly, a lot of school must just take what is on a coaches resume at face value and don't bother to verify it.

There's a rumor on our 247 board that we may have reached an agreement with our new coach.
