Stuff like last night's basketball game is going to keep you out of the Pac-12 should they expand by poaching the Big 12. 07-coffee3

This isn't the first time you guys have done crap like this and it most likely won't be the last.

Some high $ / low class fan sitting court side "reportedly" dropped an ethnic slur on Smart when he went out of bounds in his area.

Stuff like this has no bearing on conference realignment. What does matter are fans and TV ratings which is something UH fails miserably at.

Try getting 50K to show up to a uh game and the coogs might have a chance to get in the Big 12 once the Texoma 4 leave.

In some respects it does, are you a good cultural fit. Being seen as backward rednecks does not help TTU cause to get a invite from the P12, if that's the long term ambition.

Statement from Texas Tech

Quote:In conjunction with a review of the actions of Oklahoma State guard Marcus Smart by the Big 12 Conference, Texas Tech has completed its own thorough investigation regarding the incident at last night's basketball game involving Red Raider fan Jeff Orr. Texas Tech interviewed Mr. Orr along with numerous fans, photographers and arena personnel that were seated in the area surrounding him. Mr. Orr vehemently denied the accusation that he used a racial slur and no one in the vicinity of Mr. Orr heard such a slur.

Mr. Orr has admitted to directing an inappropriate phrase toward Marcus Smart. Texas Tech has been able to verify that statement independently through video provided by Texas Tech Sports Broadcasting. At no point on the film can a racial slur be heard.

Texas Tech is committed to sportsmanship and expects fans to abide by the rules set forth by the Big 12 Conference and the university. Comments such as those used by Mr. Orr are unacceptable and not condoned by Texas Tech University.

As a result of this incident, Mr. Orr has voluntarily agreed to not attend a Texas Tech home or away basketball game for the remainder of the season.

Jeff Orr Statement

"I would like to take this opportunity to offer my sincere apologies to Marcus Smart, Oklahoma State, Tubby Smith and the Texas Tech Men's Basketball program. My actions last night were inappropriate and do not reflect myself or Texas Tech - a university I love dearly. I regret calling Mr. Smart a "piece of crap" but I want to make it known that I did not use a racial slur of any kind. Additionally, I would like to offer my apologies to Texas Tech fans that have been embarrassed by the attention this incident has created."

Glad to hear the university took quick action. Called the kid a piece of crap, I've been called much worst. Kid needs to control his emotions.

Orr agreed to stay away from all Texas Tech home games for the rest of the season. No f'in way Orr agrees to that if the only thing he said was "piece of crap".

The "agreement" wasn't exactly the result of an arms'-length negotiation, Wedge. TTU told the guy to Stay Away, and Told the guy that if he wanted to come back next season he'd better nod his head and "agree" with TTU's press-release.

TTU wouldn't tell someone (especially a longtime season-ticket holder) to stay away from their arena unless what he said was far worse than "piece of crap."

Fans shout "bullsh!t" at basketball games whenever the ref makes a call they don't like, and no one is asked to leave the building because of that.

Do the women surrounding Orr piss anyone else off? The one old lady is clapping in his face and the other one is so shocked when he reacts after being provoked in an emotional game...get a life.

It's highly within the realm of possibility that Marcus Smart is just a sensitive dude that needs to grow up.

1. TT is in the final moments of a heated game, gives up a break away layup and has to foul the guy.

2. Great player on the losing team hears something from a fan.

3. Great player turns around and pushes the fan.

4. Announcer says he heard someone say the fan called the great player a racial epithet.

5. Nobody else close to the situation says anything about a racial epithet.

6. Smart issues a classy apology without any accusations about what was said.

7. Fan issues an apology, says he won't attend any games for the rest of the year.

8. Fan also clarifies that he said nothing racist, just called him a piece of crap (classy guy).

9. Nobody from the scene is refuting the fan's version.

Is any of this wrong? If not, the public anger needs to dial down a bit.

That's how I see it as well. 2 people made a mistake in a tense situation and apologized and owned it. Both have been disciplined and accepted it. Seems to me the situation was handled just fine.

People riding TTech fans a whole over this should consider how this thing could have escalated. I'll be honest, if some opponent comes into our crowd and shoves somebody, the chances it ends there seem pretty low. I am not a TTech fan, but I don't see giving them a bad rap for this.
