Sitting here 46 years out from the last mission to the moon, and its getting harder to accept the fact that we went.

Why have we not returned in 46 years? Why did they go for 3 years and just stop cold forever?

They barely even had created a rocket capable of entering orbit in 1969, Look at the rockets and technology we have today in comparison. Our cell phones are a million times more powerful than the computers they were using. We have advanced in ways that are hard to even describe since 1972.

I think its possible we went, but every year now my doubts are growing. Not only have we not returned to the moon, we haven't once left earth's orbit with a manned mission.

It just doesn't add up as the years and decades continue to pile up.

It makes sense if you factor money into it. There became no benefit to it. No benefit beyond normal Earth orbit.

Sounds like a great excuse, but the money has been available for a long time. Both privately and publically. Not only here but other nations around the world.

NASA's overall budget the last 50 years is microscopic compared to other government-funded programs.

46 years and we are to believe the money was never there for one single trip back in the modern era? That doesn't pass the smell test imo.
All six Moon landings happened during the Nixon administration. No other national leader has claimed to have landed astronauts on the Moon, despite 46 years of rapid technological development.

Despite where we are with technology—I think the big issue is there simply isn’t much there that we can porfitably exploit. The computers we had in the landing craft weren’t much better than a calculator.

That said, you’d be surprised what they could do with old technology. I was recently surprised to learn that old WWII destroyers had a radar controlled mechanical targeting computer that electrically controlled and sycronized all the 5 inch guns on board. It could calculate and adjust for range, wind, speed of target, the speed of the ship, and the yaw of the deck for waves. It could calculate 20 firing solutions in a minute. That’s pretty impressive for the early 1940’s.

does it really fk'n matter....most couldn't care less....

nixon was the worst since LBJ......that was hard to do.....then came peanut boy, cali hair gel, bush, clinton (who I actually think did the best in my lifetime) 'nucular' bush, and fk'n goddammed #ZEROcremedelacreme.....that's a 'sigh' from the heavens if I've ever seen one or a many.....

look at that bs in relative terms why the poor are by design TODAY.....

it's been a setup for votes from the wayback machine......

I simply find it strange anyone really gives a shite today whether aye or nay......

the moon was only another thing to conquer and invest in tech moving forward.....

I have no problem if one wants to argue that......hoiwever, the USD still reigns supreme....

how you make it at the 'alter' is another animal.... 03-wink

But again, you are just looking at it from an American view.

I don't think anyone doubts we can send unmanned missions or land equipment, its the manned missions I'm specifically referencing here.

No other world leader has publicly claimed to have put men on the moon the last 50 years.

Its now 2018. The entire thing is questionable at this point imo. I think the thought of it takes some getting used to though, I too strongly rejected the idea 10+ years ago. I have been a space science nerd my whole life.
We went, every time... It was a PR stunt to put the Russians in their place and we stopped going because (1) we won the space race and (2) it was too much money.

There is zero practical benefit to putting a man on the moon right now, so we send unmanned probes there.

What remarkable is we may have never sent the men at all, but still used the propaganda in the cold war. Its not something I would argue too deeply for obvious reasons, and I myself am not even sure.

I have zero doubt we actually landed on the moon. I live in Houston. That NASA project was so large that it would literally be impossible to keep it a secret if it were faked. Besides, we couldnt fake photos and video that well back then.

As for why nobody has done it since----I guess is the reason is "why bother?". Whats the point of a manned mission to the moon at this point? Manned space flight is risky and expensive and there is nothing there. AI and robotics have improved to the point you can likely get anything you need from a robotic rover space mission and save a ton of money over the manned alternative to the same destination. Besides, most countries have limited resources. Most nations considering a space program have figured out that if your going to spend money on space---its better for your nations future to develop an ICBM with a nuke than it is to put a man on the moon.

My guess is economics will guide space exploration from here on. I think what you might see is private companies or even governments sending robotic rovers to moons and planets in search of rare earth elements that are starting to get in short supply here. If you find them, then you have an economically sound reason to start landing men on other moons/planets. 04-cheers

I felt the same way for a LONG time.

I actually used to tell people that all the time when it came up. I had ZERO doubt in my mind. I gave the same reasons being given here about money and whats the point and all that stuff.

I'm just a little less sure these days.

To what end? The entire program was a PR stunt to beat the soviets there...

Quote:Why did they go for 3 years and just stop cold forever?

Because there is no more to be done sending people there, it's just lost money at this point.

Quote:They barely even had created a rocket capable of entering orbit in 1969

What? The Mercury program created a rocket sufficient to put a man in orbit in 1960

Quote:Look at the rockets and technology we have today in comparison.

None of which make a trip to the moon worth the investment.

Quote:Our cell phones are a million times more powerful than the computers they were using. We have advanced in ways that are hard to even describe since 1972.

Agreed which makes a retread to the moon even more superfluous.

Quote:Not only have we not returned to the moon, we haven't once left earth's orbit with a manned mission.

We don't have the tech to put a man out of earth Orbit *except* to go to the moon. The Technical and logistical requirements of going to mars has next to nothing to do with computing power.

Let's put this in perspective. Apollo took about 3 days to get from the Earth to the moon. Mars would take us 84 times as long. That's 84 times more O2, Food, Water, and energy just to get to mars.

Then going into and out of Mars' gravity well will take a lot more energy than getting into and out of the moons.

Finally, for most of it's orbit around the earth, the Moon is located within the earths magnetosphere. Going to mars would expose humans to far more radiation than they would be exposed to going to the moon.
All fair points and opinions.

Some are points I myself have made in the past.
Fastest ever

Lockheed SR-71 Blackbird
Since 1976, the Lockheed SR-71 Blackbird has held the world record for the fastest 'air-breathing manned aircraft' with a recorded speed of 1,905.81 knots (2,193.2 mph; 3,529.6 km/h). That works out to a staggering 36.55 miles/58.83 km per minute

First flight‎: ‎22 December 1964

yup! kinda simple....

it's a big ol' rock.....we now know that.....

it's now a big whoopdy do....

why one would spend that money or any other resources to move past that in manned travel is beyond me....

if'n they want to cultivate sci-fi going on a musk mission to mars, go for it....give those goof balls a few billion and be done with it....

people that think it would be profitable or plausible to terraform/cultivate/extract in the esoteric exotic....???

hell, the dipshites can't even define ours in the 'why' and 'how'......

yeah man, let's go after the moon and mars......

lmmfao at the brainwashed and foolish....

We concentrated on things like SkyLab, then the space station, experiments and the like.

What’s the point of returning to a veritable astrological wasteland?

Optics? Hang out? Prove we could do it again?

Kinda like taking the kids to Disneyland in my book, been there, done that, bought the crappy T-shirt and fake, plastic Harry Potter magic wand.

Rode a couple good roller coasters I guess, so what next? Go back?

Meh. No point IMO.

If they can FIND a point, then I’m all in. “Beating the Russians”, yea, we’ve done that.

This.

Man will be on the moon again soon enough. He'll speak Mandarin.
You obviously haven't been to Disney lately JMU. I don't think you can get the Harry Potter souvenirs there anymore (that's the big attraction at Universal Studios). But I'm with you - I can't figure out how some people go there every year. It's more of an obsession than a reasonable destination spot IMO.

In regards to the moon, everyone else has outlined the reasons already. But there is a chance it becomes the 7-11 or Buckee's of the future as the refueling spot for manned missions to Mars.

Good grief...

Disney, universal, whatevs.

It was 2 weeks worth of wandering around, paying up for 2 hour “speed passes”, then sitting alone at the outdoor bar at night cause everyone else was wrecked from getting up at 5 A.M.

After the ten hour drive to get there I get to drop another $45 for a dime store, cheap plastic wand. Forgive me if I forgot, NO , more likely blocked out, where the damn thing came from...

All in good fun. I’m glad we did it. More glad it’s done and over.

Maybe I’ll enjoy going with grandkids one day, and casting a wry smile as my own kids deal with that crap.

I’ll take a week sitting on the beach with an unbaited rod in my hand anytime...
