Two weeks from today is first session! Can't wait to find out what the new regime will start putting on the field (and I'm guessing we see some position changes between then and fall).
Do we have a full coaching staff yet? I understood we still lacked a LB coach.
I haven't seen anything. Someone posted that Vestal is moving to LBs, so we would then need a CB coach. One way or another, seems like in the next couple days we should see a coach hire.
Our practices open to the public?

I asked Rick Mello and he said that as of now scrimmages would be open to the public.

Is there a schedule for spring practices/scrimmages posted anywhere?

This is a fact,

Coach Vestal is the LB coach and my son is very happy about that.
Major upgrade. He's a great guy. The only holdover from previous staff.
One week! Anyone seen a schedule of when the public can attend?
This was just tweeted. Info about practice dates and how to attend.

I hope Bloomgren continues Bailiff's tradition of bringing back prior head coaches. I've enjoyed talking with Ken Hatfield, Fred Goldsmith, and Watson Brown (who's incredibly entertaining).

+1
Intellectual Brutality
Practice on the morning of Beer Bike. Hope Bloomgren is ready for some unwanted “spectators.”

Dear fellow members of the Rice community,

I am sad to share the news that Blain Padgett, a junior at Lovett College and a member of Owls Football team, passed away today at home in his apartment. Blain was from Sour Lake, Texas, and was a Sports Management major. As a defensive end for the Owls, he was Conference USA Commissioner’s Honor Roll in 2016 and 2017.

As a community, we grieve with his parents, Mical and Wyndi Padgett, and his two sisters, Kenedy and Kamryn. We know and feel how great their loss is. Lovett College is planning a memorial gathering for this Sunday evening.

In a letter he wrote to me recently, Blain said that “The proudest moment of my life was when I was given the opportunity to attend Rice University. One of my goals my freshman year was to not only grow individually from the rich diversity offered at Rice but to also become a part of this amazing university and to give what I have to offer to better Rice University. These past two years at Rice, I have grown to love and respect the culture even more.”

I believe that, in his words and in his love for Rice’s community, many of you see yourselves. Let us build on that community as we grieve together and support each other. Reach out to one another, to provide and to receive comfort and care.

Counselors in the Student Wellbeing Office and in the Rice Counseling Center stand ready to assist anyone in need of support. You can simply drop in their offices or contact them at 713.348.3311 on a 24/7 basis.

Wishing peace to all of you in the time of sadness,
Dean Hutch

If anyone was planning on attending practice on Monday, I would definitely check the schedule before trying to attend. Based on the discussions in the press box at the baseball game yesterday I think there will be changes to the schedule based on trying to help everyone cope with the news about Blain.

I don't think anyone is worried about practice right now.
