I think the Cats just hit a mid-season funk, made mistakes they haven’t been making. I think they’ll figure it out. Some things I liked though:

Cumberland’s shot is back. And his ability to drive the bucket is reappearing at times. He had butterfingers today a few times and got called for a bs charge. But he’s starting to realize when and how he can be a freight train again.

Broome played better on Defense than he ever has. Loved what I saw from him on that end. Tons of energy. Kept his man in front of him. Switched well and got around screens. And his offense was one of the few bright spots today.

Tsosome showed the ability to guard the perimeter. In fact, I’d say he did the best at keeping Shamet off balance there at the end of the game. Too bad Mick didn’t try that until late.

Our biggest problems are fixable. Allowing too many offensive rebounds, not rotating to open shooters (which we HAD been doing very well). Evans being impotent in the first halves...he’s got to figure that out, right? Clark not being himself the last two games.

I think we get it together and make a nice tourney run. Better to peak in a month than now and then hit a funk in mid March.

I’m just not that concerned. We ran into a team that outmuscled us and got away with 5,000 fouls (Houston) and a team that made shots and got the loose balls today. Mick will fix those items.

If Broome can give us minutes like today, the rest will fall into place for this team.
I'm not sure it's a mid-season funk, it's problems that seem to crop up over and over for Cronin coached teams. None the less.

Nsoseme moves better than any big man I've seen - and that includes the 5 star kids UK and Duke get - and better than any man his size has any right to. If he can develop an offensive game he will be in the NBA. Honestly, I am almost looking forward to Washington leaving. Washington has been great, but the size and athleticism of Brooks and Nsoseme is enticing and with more minutes they should turn into very good or even great players.

Cumberland it getting his shot at the bucket and mid-range game back. His FT percentage is climbing as well. If he can hit from 3 at 40%+ he might be able to carry us.

Broome looks like he's putting it all together at the right time. His offense and defense was a bright spot today. He should be the starter.

I still have hope, but not as much as I did last week. We get a couple of easy weeks to recover and then comes the make or break at the end of the season. If we can somehow go to Wichita State and steal a game from them, things will look much better then they do right now.
UC just couldn’t get over the hump. Too many un forced turnovers and missed shots at the rim. Otherwise they win this game. This is they second time they lost two in a row. Last time they went 16-0 afterwards. Just start another such streak.
This was Broome’s best game all season. He was pretty much all we heard about preseason. I want to see more.

That sounds good to me!

I may not have much faith in it, but I’m on board.
The next one is the one that really counts. Let’s break WSU fans hearts. On their own court.
Overall, I can't be too disappointed in how we played. If some key free throws late in the game were made, we could have won. Offense shot 48%. That was a good sign even if WSU's defense isn't as good as Houston's.

Individually, I was also very pleased to see how Cumberland played. I was beginning to lose faith in him with how he has played much of the season. Good to see Broome have a nice game as well.
I found it very curious how Cronin used the whole bench. Especially that first half. And against who may be the best team they played all season. Dont ever remember seeing him do that before. Any season! And they generally hung right in there. A great experience for them and confidence builder. That was the biggest positive I took from this game. Hopefully it will really benefit going forward.
This one stings for me, a lot more that the @Houston loss. Blowing out the next 3 bottom feeders won't do anything, gotta figure away out to get them back at their place. Hopefully Mick can quit with the goofy substitutions and just let his team play.
We played one crap the bed game this year and it was on the road to our arch rivals. Who are by all accounts having a hell of a season thus far. The Florida, Houston and WSU games we lost by 6, 5 and 4 points respectively. Florida was ranked when we played them, Houston has not lost at home and they will likely rank near/within top 25 on Monday and WSU has remained ranked all season. We have not suffered a bad or WTF loss all season long. Tonight's game hurt because we failed to protect our home floor but we lost to a very good team in so doing. Do I like to lose? Of course not! But the silver lining is we STILL control our own destiny to the outright conference championship. Again, WSU and Houston have to continue winning games the same as we do. Worry about the NCAAT when that time comes. Right now, focus on winning the American. WSU Round 2 presents us with another quality win opportunity. We lacked those opportunities in this conference for the most part so embrace it.
Well said!

What Brooks are you watching? He looks like a deer on ice out there - unable to play offense or defense. Aside from that 8 pts in 3 minutes stretch he had mid season, he seems to have regressed from last year. I haven't looked but he had to be -10+ when he was in there today.

We had 21 turnovers against a not very good Florida team, who was even worse the day we played them because they couldn't make a shot. That was most certainly a crap the bed game.

Ok. Let me put it this way. Xavier was the only game that made us look like an exposed team and it was the only loss in double digits as pointed out above. This is a silver linings thread by the way.
Question. Generally speaking, why are the most negative UC basketball fans (Negative Nancys) those with the lowest rep? Has anyone else noticed that? Just curious.

He was +5 actually, best of any of our centers. Though part of the is just that he didn't play much with Jenifer in (he was -3 with Jenifer, +8 with Broome).

Offensively he doesn't have much, but defensively he is good. He has the size and athleticism, getting a lot more minutes next yea should help him get relaxed and comfortable with the flow of the game. That should reduce the number of fouls and TO's. Our only big who consistently looks like he doesn't belong on the floor is Tre Scott. I am waiting for Cronin to start subbing Nsoseme in at PF for Clark instead of Scott.
Stop it with Nso plays great D crap. We couldn't get a stop to save our life or a defensive rebound with him in game. He actually looked better for us on O than he does he D. He at least be in position to get offensive rebounds, set solid screens and he makes his layups, other than that he shouldnt be playing down stretch in big time games.

He helped shut down their point guard in my view which kept UC in the game.
