Gary Parrish Says The End-Game In College Basketball's Latest Scandal Anyone's Guess

We will all know everyone, including the NCAA president is corrupt? With so much corruption, will there actually be any change?
Here's the article from Pat Forde and Pete Thamel. I've been expecting the Seton Hall part ever since Andy Miller's files and computers were taken as part of the investigation. It'll be interesting to see the fallout from this because (a) so many programs will be impacted and (b) the NCAA has always been wildly inconsistent with punishment, especially lately.

I like the old “Today seven SEC schools were proven to be paying student-athletes. The NCAA handed down a punishment of no post-season play, two lost scholarships and a $1.5 million fine to all Mid-American Conference schools”.
Jerry Tarkanian would be upset if Cleveland State doesn't get a scholarship reduction and a postseason ban.
Xavier BB is involved because of agent payment to a player.

I keep hoping that top notch players with strong moral compasses will pass on big name programs and sign with middling mid-major programs who have proved they’re clean by not making an NCAA tournament since, say, 1980. They don’t need to choose COMPLETELY moribund programs like those without an NCAA appearance since, say, 1968. 1980 would be fine. Seriously, this could cause some non-traditional powers to pick up recruits they might not have otherwise got, or there could just be wrist-slaps, but this seems bigger than that. I was relieved to know that Pitino knew nothing about this.
Maybe this is how we get into the ncaa tournament. With 150 of the top schools on probation the door will be wide open.
Final Four! Final Four! Final Four!
College Basketball's Ticking Time Bomb Set To Explode.

Until the universities decide this is not good for the university - it will continue on. The NCAA screwed up when it coordinated and accommodated the "one and done" with the NBA while the NCAA cheered them on. It is a disgrace to universities. In my mind, this should all be handled separate from the Universities themselves - and they survive on their own. Sell tickets to students such that it is not mandated by fees to all students. They then pay rent for the arenas they play in, use of the University logos and all other copyrighted materials they want to use, coaching contracts, Athletic Director and admin for athletics, pay for security, parking lots, medical, uniforms, practice time at the arena, etc. etc. etc. They get to keep revenues from ticket sales, television contracts, post season play, sale of gear (they are paying for copyrighted materials, logos, etc.)

That will then create a situation where real capitalism exists. The NCAA would be forced to compete with other organizations that would dictate rules, negotiate contracts, pay players if they so choose, etc. The Universities can focus on what it does best - or should do best - is educating. Recruit based on who offers the most money and is willing to risk a "one and done" for their signing bonus. They don't even have to go to school - but would have to pay for living costs and meals to sit around and wait for practice.

This will never happen because the universities will never let it happen. The NCAA will always be the sanctioned enforcement arm of the mega rich universities. At least now with felonies occurring, the law may finally have an impact that creates the paradigm shift for universities to embrace. Anyone believe that will happen? My guess - no freaking way they change beyond a few harmless cosmetic rules that gloss over the greed they have developed for all the money available to them.

I guess I am just resistant still to the changes that have taken place over the past 30 or so years. Even thought I don't think Coach K is that great of a coach, his players graduate, have a high GPA, and have represented the University extremely well. I am ok with that. In fact, I love that as an alumni. The MAC should be proud of it's member institutions.
