Agree, Beav...My Dad also brought him up often when talking about USM sports. RIP

I consider myself honored at having been able to bump elbows with Pepper as his career ended at USM and then the same with Jim Davenport as his began. I asked Pepper to take it easy one Sun. p.m. as some of us boys were tossing balls around in the shade of the old Rock. He wanted me to catch a few pitches but burned me up within just a few. He could do wonders with his pitch and I teased about not curving one around and hitting me in the back. Hangout areas changed and not too much contact with Jim. Edit Note: I became friends in later years with a man who had been a crackerjack player for Northwest La State back in those days. He had played against Pepper as a safety and recalled a play where Pepper was downfield on a pass play. The ball was thrown at an angle where Pepper, with his toes just at out of bounds line, reached far over and caught it in his fingertips. My friend said he had assumed no catch, impossible, thus just stood there "somewhat embarassed" as Pepper trotted down for a TD.
