Tomorrow during the day, ODU will play Education Game Number Two against the Golden Panthers of FIU. This is an important game for ODU. Let's look at the standings going into Thursday's game with the team's around ODU....

Charlotte. 3-4 (conference record)
FIU: 3-4
North Texas: 2-6
ODU: 2-6
Marshall: 1-6
UTSA: 1-7

If the season ended today, we would be in the Con USA tournament. But since we have 8 games left, we have time to make a move. ODU has a home game with North Texas, a road game with Charlotte, and we play FIU tomorrow. We havea good chance of advancing our record and not getting into the tournament as "last ones in". This is a big game that could determine the standings for the tournament.

The Golden Panthers have an interesting win progression over the last three years.
2014-15: 3 wins
2015-16: 4 wins
2016-17: 5 wins
Already this year's squad has more wins than last year. So progress from second year coach Tiara Malcom. (the former Delaware player)

Since conference play, Pound is now averaging 15.3 ppg and 10.7 rpg. She is dangerous down low and is definitely a player to guard. Hudson is averaging 13.0 ppg and 5.1 apg. She is their floor general and Rodgers is number two. Together they accont for over half of the team's assist per game. They have four players who average around ten points a game. That is what this team tough to guard. Almost everything Gordon shots is from downtown and she shots over 40%. They are aggressive, as evident by there 13.1 free throws made per game.

ODU is 1-0 in education games. We have a two game winning streak at home. FIU has yet to win on the road. And we have a full week to rest our players and prepare. Yes we lost, but the team came to play with just eight players. Hopefully we will have Loftus back.

This is our time to start making a move in the standings and make sure we have some space to make the tournament.

I feel a win coming on here. :-)

I don't think it's Nikki's fault with depth! I think it's Karen's fault. She left nikki with nothing and unfortunately Nikki's paying the price with lack of depth this season!

It was a joke. Nikki is doing a really good job with this limited roster.
Least we are tied with the worst record.

At least we won 5 so far

Wendy Larry had a record of 5 wins and 21 losses before winning 17 straight CAa championships

Maybe Coach Nikki will win 17 straight CUSA titles. She’s got a pretty good incoming class so far and likely will add 2 or 3 more recruits. With the hold overs from this year, things look bright.

As for the 4th quarter, I wish the team would go for the juggler. However, Coach Nikki has to balance over exerting a thin lineup or taking it a bit easy by working the clock.

When they have a lead in the 4th I wonder if it help to spread it and melt the clock. Well that's if we have a big lead. Did Bernadeco warm up today

Only 8 players dressed, again. Lovey Harden with a concussion this week and Carolina is noticeably limping, again. Carly Brew, who has of late been an impressive rebounder, was in foul trouble the ENTIRE game. Sitting most of the first half with 2 early fouls, then racking up 2 in under a minute in the second half. She fouled out in only 11 minutes played. Effectively, Nikki had basically 7 players today. At one time leading by 22, ODU only had 1 basket in the 4th, while sending FIU to the line about a zillion times in the 4th and they hit almost all their free throws in the 4th, after an early ugly free throw performance. FIU deployed full court press in the 4th which again disrupted ODU pretty badly. Just not as bad as Hampton. Lots of turnovers in the 4th for ODU. Up until then they took pretty good care of the ball. They played hard, but I think they just don't have the horses to make a strong 4 quarter game. Too bad we can't just play 3 quarter games!

Preseason, looking at the roster, I figured this would be a 5-10 win season, with 10 being very optimistic. The good news is, the team continues to battle hard and shows more energy overall than in the past several years. With such a difficult season, that is a hard thing to maintain. Kudos to Coach Nikki for that culture change. Victoria Morris is developing from very good to this girl can be special pretty quickly under Nikki's coaching. The next 3 years are going to be exciting, especially when she is surrounded by more pieces. She came in a really good 3 point shooter and now she is starting to drive to the basket and rebound, as well. All the girls who decided to go in other directions when Karen left, should be very sorry. They had the chance to get some really good coaching.

Unfortunately, due to all the missed snow days, many schools cancelled their participation today, in favor of instructional time. There were only a few groups there and from the buses I saw, it looked like mostly private schools. Although the kids were relatively few in number, they were LOUD. The number of adult fans turning out today, on a Friday morning, was fairly impressive.
