Rob Reeves, who was out of football last year. Long time member of the Jerry Kill staff ( MN,NIU,ECT). Coached with Jay Nunez.
Link? I haven't seen this anywhere yet.
He's the new 'passing game' coordinator. If he recruits like Nunez, I like him!

Saginaw Valley alum, from Saline. All AMerican QB at Saginaw Valley. Assume he'll double as QB coach as well.

Prefers coaching to sales apparently.........https://www.astroturf.com/2017/08/14/rob-reeves-named-astroturf-director-of-college-football-sales/
i wonder if he's related to Jim Boone super assistant Ray Reeves.

Search for "Eastern Michigan".

He has a wealth of experience at the FBS level as posted above and Minn. site below:

http://www.gophersports.com/sports/m-foo...59716.html

My takeaways:

1). Lot of experience coaching TEs and RBs at very high levels (e.g., B1G, NIU, etc.).

2). Was an all-American QB at Saginaw Valley State.

3). From Saline which means he knows the area very, very well which should work for recruiting and community outreach.

Has potential to be a very big + for the program.

P.S. with each team being able to add another asst coach, I hope we don't lose anyone. Lot of open jobs.
So, his title is "passing game coordinator." Does that mean Keen's role as offensive coordinator is being partially reigned in? If Reeves will have control over designing pass plays and sometimes calling them, is this a response to our lackluster offensive schemes in 2017?

Probably to give him more $.

That said, it raises the question: Where is the $ coming from?

And on a tangent, more dollars to football and pennies to MBB?

It really seems EMU (and other MAC teams) are putting their bucks into FB to the detriment of MBB. MAC MBB is suffering esp. when it comes to HC salaries. MAC is falling further and further behind.

I'll post the salaries of public school coaches who went to the NCAAs in March (2017).

Look what has happened to coaches at Mo. Valley, A-10, West Coast, etc. The type of conferences the MAC used to compete with. They get on a roll and then their coaches bust the bank salary wise.

These salaries are insane.

http://sports.usatoday.com/ncaa/salaries...all/coach/

Look at the salaries for Wichita State, Gonzaga, VCU, Dayton, Rhode Island, etc.
I learned growing up that you get what you pay for.

It is NO SURPRISE to me that MAC MBB has declined say the last 15 years after MAC schools decided they wanted to get more competitive in football while some FCS conferences (e.g., A-10, Mo. Valley, West Coast, etc.) plowed their money into MBB. I believe that was the issue between Murphy and Lyke. Does Dayton, Xavier, Gonzaga, Wichita State, etc. have scholarship football???

All of that said, FOOTBALL is definitely the #1 college sport. I have NO problems sinking money into it.

I believe the vision for EMU basketball when Braun was here was to become a dominant Mid Major Basketball program. If EMU had our 90-91, 94-98 teamsat the convocation center, I believe not only would we attract local ypsilanti fans but also metro fans. People would have come to see Boykins, Dial, etc at the Convo. If we had coaching, and players like 94-98, promoted MBB, EMU could draw 5000 people to each game which would enable us paying higher coaching salaries. However, EMU like all MAC schools lose their momentum when the good coaches and ADs leave for the P5 paycheck. We need a high energy coaching infusion for MBB just like we have in football.

MAC teams also compete DIRECTLY for resources, players, and coaches with Horizon League teams at schools that DO NOT have football teams to spend money on. That will always hinder the MAC elevating itself as a basketball conference.

To his credit, it seems Creighton realized something had to be done to try and spark the offense. Is this guy the answer, who knows? At least Creighton saw the same thing we all saw last year.

Hopefully this guy and Keen can work well together, and come up with something more creative and productive. Working with Kill for 19 years I'm sure he'll bring a lot of that influence. Looking back at his All American days as a QB at Saginaw Valley, he was a dual-threat QB himself. Rushing for 15 TD's as a Sr. in 95'

Assuming the offensive 'style' will be tailored to whoever wins the QB competition. A lot of very different guys in the QB room at this point.

VERY true. Oakland, Butler (when in that conference), Valpo (when in that conference), etc.

Absolutely, so when I see Oakland, UDM, Dayton, Xavier, Butler, Valpo, etc. ALL within the 3 contiguous MAC states of MI, OH, and IN spending big bucks on MBB and WINNING (except UDM) I realize that the MBB landscape has changed SO MUCH since Braun was at EMU.

So those who wish to see the return of EMU's MBB greatness is a little like Putin wishing to recreate the USSR (for those not familiar with their history the USSR dissolved in Dec. 1991, or 5 years before Braun left for Cal.

I'm now convinced that a future MAC Sweet 16 team (in next 5 years) would be more like a lightning strike than something I would expect to see say in the next 5 years.

I can't think of an Group of 5 school with consistently good basket ball (not counting schools in the AAC). I mean - maybe Fresno or UNLV? It isn't really a thing.
Gonzaga
(01-11-2018 07:03 PM)masttg Wrote: [ -> ]Gonzaga

Gonzaga doesn't have FB so I wouldn't consider them in a G5 grouping.

They have it easier than say Dayton and others who play non-scholarship football. CC's former school, Drake, was non-scholarship football.
Regardless of title I view the new coach as a quarterback coach reporting to Keen as offensive coordinator instead of dual roles

Fair categorization. The 300k spent on golf would help basketball tremendously.

Agree....EMU, like all G5 schools struggle financially to field athletic teams, and here we are having more athletic programs than all of our peer MAC schools. I don't understand this rationalization.

Luckey,

You missed about a dozen or two posts:

1). Title IX plays a big part forcing us to keep sports we might otherwise want to drop. We have a university with many more female, than male, students.

2). Many of our Olympic sports are our most successful sports and some have been supported directly financially by donor money. Years ago a donor left big bucks for wrestling. Many have noted T&F, swimming and diving, etc. are untouchable sports at EMU.

3). One sport we are struggling, baseball, is a sport we dropped a good bit of money in recent years on the stadium, field turf, etc. A school doesn't invest millions of donors funds and then drop the sport. Baseball does drain a fair number of scholarships and is expensive as a travel sport.

4). I doubt we'd get rid of golf because we have the golf course. I don't know much about golf.

5). Remember many sports use partial scholarships and they do not count for much scholarship money. FB and MBB and WBB are full scholarship sports (no partial scholarships).
