UCF's President and AD are claiming a National Championship for the school. Not
THE National Championship, but
A National Championship.
What are they up to? While only speculative, I found this interesting, with implications for all G5s, including NIU.

I support this 100%, and think this is exactly the type of thing that will continue moving forward the idea of a full December Madness CFB playoff that includes the G5 conferences.

I support it. FBS is the only level of football that doesn't have a real playoff.

I’ve always favored a 16-team playoff (read “Death to the BCS”). Realistically, the best we can hope for now is an 8-team playoff, with a guaranteed G5 berth. If that happened, it would also probably force the P5 into more equitable revenue-sharing.
Much better than the idea of a G5 playoff or a drop to FCS.

Hopefully at 16 the G5 participant won't be ranked the 16th seed. Otherwise you're going to draw the #1 seed and be one and done every year. Probably have to be 12 or higher to have a realistic chance to get passed the first round. If its only 8 teams you can be sure the G5 will be #8 and get the #1.

No doubt. But, there’s the chance to pull the upset. Which is more than the G5s have now.

I guess for them it's a valid excuse which can be used anytime they lose. Also, what does that say to the bowl organizers that their game means nothing?
That's the Sun Times for ya. Didn't even know they even existed anymore. Somebody should put that paper out of it's misery.
I know you can't just keep adding games, but if they are reluctant to move it to 8 teams with the rule that any undefeated G5 team gets in, then there needs to be a play-in type game like March Madness for any team that goes undefeated. It won't happen often, but take the undefeated team and play the #4 seed for that last spot. If by craziness you have 2 undefeated G5's, then the #3 seed is a play in game as well. The #5 or #6 seed can't complain because they had their chance during the regular season to capture the 4 or 3 spot and lost. UCF did everything they could and only off the field politics kept them out.
I love it, good for them. It's sports, if you win all of your games, you should be a champion. What's that? Strength of schedule? Oh...well ask UCF if they'd like to play some bigger programs and have them 'care' about the game, I'm sure they'd oblige.
And this is the perfect year, UCF beat the team that had beaten the playoff teams. A playoff team, Clemson, lost to a BAD Syracuse team, etc, etc. Anyone, especially in the media, getting b*tt hurt about this needs to wipe the tears from their eyes and take it as what it is- a clear view into what's wrong with the system, keep improving it. Almost every other sport and level has been able to figure it out, stop acting like CFB can't figure it out.

Gus Malzahn and his players said repeatedly how important the game was to them and how badly they wanted a win at Mercedes-Benz Stadium. Their last game, a loss to Georgia in the SEC championship, was at M-B Stadium. And their opener next season is against Washington, again at M-B Stadium.
If you watched the game, you know the UCF win was no fluke. In the 2nd half, UCF started to dominate the line of scrimmage. Great QB play from Milton, but the game was won up-front. So, when I read something like the Greenberg comments, I call B.S.

I honestly did not know that the Sun Times had any actual employees anymore!? I expect that paper will be folding up shop in the next few years anyhow.
Schools claiming national championships is not a new thing. Here is a pretty good article on past schools that have done the very same thing, including Alabama and Minnesota (the Minnesota one is particularly interesting because they counted 2 wins against high school teams)
