Looks like ND is farther away from joining the ACC because of the 13th data point reduced status:

From the link:

We thought the 13th [data] point was really important, right? But that doesn't seem to be that important anymore.

"It seems like the goal posts shift and move a little bit as it comes to how you get in, and this schedule is really, really difficult."
[/u]
13th data point only becomes important when comparing similar teams. The committee didn't think a 2-loss Ohio State team that lost by 31 to Iowa was similar enough to a 1-loss Alabama team that lost its last game of the regular season.

ND has already jimmy rigged it's ACC schedule. However, Notre didn't account for the ACC getting better at football this quickly when they signed the agreement. Richt wasn't at Miami. Fuente wasn't at VT. Dabo was just getting started at Clemson. The ACC is light years better now than it was 5 years ago.

It's hard to imagine how ND could be any further away from joining the ACC in football than they already are.
So ND is going to weaken its schedule. Most likely adding another NBC game? I guess it’s good they care about Bowls and Playoffs.

It sounded more like they want to shift the games around to space out their harder games.

Who doesn’t?
It might not be just a rearrangement. With this comment by Kelly from the link:

” So if you win 'em all, they can't be mad at you. We've got to play our five ACC schools, so you can't have everything."

ACC games are the only ones he committed to playing. I think there might be more on the table than just arranging.

Maybe they should drop Stanford?
I doubt they'd give up Stanford, USC, and Navy. Add in the 5 ACC games that gives them 4 to play with. ND's schedule is already set through 2020. I don't know how much they can do other than........join the ACC.
UCF went undefeated. I wonder if they had played 4 P5 teams and still went undefeated and won their CCG if they would have made the playoffs? If ND went undefeated and played only 7P5 teams would they have made the playoffs?
I think so.

Nah, the ACC should hold out for Penn State and Auburn!

ND is never joining the ACC.

That said, the committee will always change the rules to suit the SEC (especially Bama) team. So the belief that you can emulate Bama here and 'have a weak schedule' (which the did this year, but not intentionally) .....doesn't matter. The committee looks at SEC differently. It is a rigged system.

Amazing how intelligent CFB coaches don't understand what is happening around them. The system is rigged, ESPN is playing the strings to benefit SEC and their bottom line.

How does everyone not see this? If ND thinks this is about catching this moving target, they aren't near as intelligent as they claim.
The CCG is still an important data point. If Clemson loses the ACC, they don't get in. The loser of the SEC doesn't get in. If Oklahoma loses the B12, they don't get in. If Wisconsin wins the B1G, they do get in.

I don't see where Kelly is going with this. This years schedule is about as favorable as it gets. Here is the generic version:

Should win
Georgia (lost)
Should win
Michigan State
Should win
Should win
Off
USC
Should win
Should win
Miami (FL) (lost)
Should win
Stanford (lost)

I think his point is they played Georgia (loss) and Stanford (loss). Replace those 2 games with G5 cupcakes and would Notre Dame have a shot at 11-1? Maybe. He'd still have the ranked wins over Michigan St and USC, which would've been better than what Bama had...

That’s the thing and it’s a great point! Unless Jack is getting ready to pass out some more envelopes at multiple Halftimes next season, ND’s schedule isn’t getting any easier for the next 5-6 years.
IMO the thirteenth data point is very important, but not as important as avoiding the second loss, especially if your two losses are by a combined 46 points. Had Ohio State avoided one of two double digit losses they would have been in the CFP and Bama would have likely been in the Orange Bowl.
This is just Kelly being Kelly.

To be fair, first the Irish have to avoid the THIRD loss before they can work on avoiding the second...

You know him better than us. Probably just trying to say Noter Dame and Playoff in the same sentence for the fan base. Kinda a Lou Holts in reverse.
Kelly needs to dip in his bag o of excusea. 4-8 was blamed on fundraising, this year we got schedule.
