What really happened that lead to him not taking this job? Did he not want it or did we screw up somehow?
I would say he was never offered the job or was seriously considered for the job.
He obviousl would be a good coach wherever he goes, but imho the chatter on this board about Marshall coming to Memphis can probably be replicated with every single major basketball fanbase that has an opening.
It was a pretty fun couple of days imagining maybe it could happen.

I think his opening salary request was higher than Memphis wanted to go ... Over $3 million range I believe ..

Marshall does the same thing every year- he acts like he is open to leaving and fields an offer then turns it down, Marshall was NEVER coming to Memphis, When the Memphis people figured this out they moved on.
Marshall will only take a top 10 job not a top 25 job.

Donovan sounds impossible, but not stupid IMO. He'd be great here, just no chance of it happening.

Did we offer and what was the offer?
Best guess is they read this board and thought Pastner's deficiencies were due to his age. So they did the anti-Pastner thing and hired Tubby when he was available. Big mistakes on both occasions. Doesn't matter anymore. We're a football school. Let Tubby play out the string. He could surprise.
A couple or three years ago I read an interview with Marshall and he seemed to indicate that he would only go to a basketball first school and that he seemed to lean toward the state of North Carolina where he has some family connection. Obviously I would think UNC or Duke would be the ones. Unless of course ECU has an opening, j/k.
Due diligence should be performed on hiring high caliber coaches like Marshall, but I doubt we get them. IMO, we should simultaneously seek a “Norvell” for basketball or a proven recruiter at the mid-major level. I do not want a retread.

From what I heard he wanted full control and the powers that be, whoever they are, wouldn’t agree to that.
It started with Gary Parish, so ya know, he probably never wanted the job in the first place.

As I recall, Marshall turned down Alabama & their $3.5M salary offer. Why would he have considered less at Memphis? Further, knowing the AL offer why would Memphis pursue Marshall if Memphis was unwilling to beat the AL offer?
