Just a bit of outside the box thinking, but we could hire Penny (or any other coach) with a significant portion of his compensation based on tickets sales and butts in the seats. You'd have to look at the details of what would be the proper %'s, but this gives the coach incentive to provide a product that sells tickets and puts people in the stands. The better he does, the more he makes. If you have a year like this one, you won't make much and you will change your ways quickly. It puts more of the risk on the coach and removes it from the University. I think it would be an especially good system for an unproven coach. Look Penny would want the job and he doesn't need the money, but should certainly be compensated fairly if he does a good job. Heck, he is essentially coaching for FREE, right now.

You honestly believe that this nonsense deserves its own thread?
Why would any coach, including Penny, even consider such a ludicrous idea when he can get a guaranteed contract at any other school in the country? Just because you say Penny 'doesn't need the money', very few individuals are willing to work for free. I believe your idea needs to go back in the box.

Penny is essentially working for free right now as a HS coach.

Of course, every coach wouldn't jump on that, but unproven coaches that really want a head coaching position might. Memphis can't afford to commit to a $10M-15M contract for Penny but could commit to $500K/year with provisions that he would get a cut of ticket sales that would elevate that to as much as $3M/year if his hiring fills the FEF and returns Memphis basketball to its former profitable status.

I'm just brainstorming ideas on how to move forward given our financial commitment to the current coach.

Think his agent will go for that?

He MIGHT jump on it. We aren't going to offer him $3M a year off the bat. He'd make more than we could commit to if he is fairly successful. Penny might do it for $500k/year flat, just as a way to help his beloved University and City out. This is just a way that he could actually get paid what he is worth if he is truly successful.
I'm still not sold on Penny being the head coach here just yet. Another coach to consider is the coach at Loyola (Chicago) Porter Moser. I read an article about him yesterday and how he has rebuilt their program, he's also a salesman of the program ala Cal. They also just went to Florida and beat them at Florida. A coach like him, one that gets it, would most likely do well considering the resources that this program could put behind him. Just like his players said after the Florida game, we didn't go there to say that we played Florida, we came to compete and win, and also to give people a reason to want to come see us play. It is not to late, I still think that Memphis is a brand, Coach Smith is a good coach, I still believe that, BUT, I think that he still doesn't understand the heartbeat of this city when it comes to our BB program.

You are creative without a doubt.

But only coaches not qualified for the job would accept that. Penny would be included in the "not qualified for the job" statement so it is not impossible.
I think including season ticket sales as part of a coaches comp will start to be more prominent in the coming years. UCF just did that with their new FB coach.
Stop with this fantasy. Penny will never be the head coach at the University of Memphis.

I hear facebook is looking for a new warrior.

This is getting ridiculous when you want Penny to work on commission.

You don’t start Penny’s salary at Memphis over 600k period. We have overpaid coaches enough at this point. People need to go check out college basketball salaries. It’s completely fine to start paying top dollar once they have earned it

Also why in the world are mods accepting of people constantly putting other people down saying they’re stupid, this is the dumbest thing they’ve ever read. These same people write this stuff multiple times every week. If you don’t like it, why don’t you move on. Stop being a tough guy behind a screen because I seriously doubt any of you would be that disrespectful to someone’s face. Grow up

I responded to the notion that Penny would accept 600k and work on commission as politely as humanly possible.

Kermit Davis makes 750k.

In this scenario, Penny would make $600K if his team was playing in an empty FEF. For the sake of argument, add $100K for every 1000 in average attendance. If he averaged 10K per game (which is very realistic), he'd make $1.6M which would be VERY FAIR compensation for a new coach.

Honestly Penny would be overpaid at 1.6 Million...

But the beauty of that contract is if he sucks the buyout is based on the 500k
Maybe we could give him some kickbacks from concessions as well!

Oooh, and he could have a merch table in the front of the forum at all the games!
