Looking to get the wife a little stocking stuffer. Paperwhite, Voyage, Oasis, Fire...? I'm not really looking for something for internet browsing but strictly e-book reading (we already own enough internet browsing devices in the house haha).. Which one do you recommend? Also, when e-books are downloaded are they actually downloaded to the device or are they only available via the cloud. Any input greatly appreciated. Thanks.
I have a kindle fire, but if you have other devices to access the internet then getting the kindle app would be the best option. A Kindle is really just a smaller/cheaper iPad mini that you can put in a purse or back jean pocket. I would only recommend it if the person you are shopping for reads a great deal. And you can download books on your device but to save memory you can keep them in the cloud as well.
If she reads much, especially before bedtime, a paperwhite is the way to go. It is MUCH easier on the eyes than a tablet. You can read it for hours without strain. And computer screens before sleep are not conducive to a good night's rest.
I've had a fire and now have a paperwhite. I like the tiny paperwhite, especially for travel.

You have a couple of ways to look at Kindles.

My preferred way is to consider the Kindle a cheap way to have a library of books available to take to the beach or pool or hot tub or... I have the least expensive Wi-Fi Kindle. I put it in a gallon clear plastic bag and use it to read outside. https://www.amazon.com/Amazon-Kindle-eRe...rds=kindle

Why? I don't care if it is damaged. I got my Kindle 10 years ago. It still works and fills this purpose.

Is there a higher priced paperwhite waterproof Kindle? Yes. It is just more expensive.

Should you consider a Fire tablet or iPad or Android tablet? Possibly. I have an iPad 3. Yes, it is old. I use it to read on the Kindle app. The app is so good. There is whispersync which allows you to read and/or listen to the audiobook. With a tablet, you also have the ability to use Audible.com. What is the drawback with a tablet? You can't read outside and in the sun.

That is why I have a cheap Kindle.
