Sigh. You might as well brace yourselves. Brittany Benefield, the 15 year old who was at the center of a sex and drugs scandal involving the football team back in 2001, is the center of a new article relating to the U.S. Senate race.

Doug Jones was one of the attorneys for UAB, and so was looking for ways to disprove or discredit her testimony. So that whole stinking can of worms is about to be opened a few days before the UTEP game.

someone delete this f'n thread or at least get the victims name out of the title
Her name is common knowledge.
Her name is in the linked article. It was sixteen years ago, she is an adult now.

We can delete it - but do you really think that it's not going to be on the *national* news tomorrow? We're going to have to have the dirtiest linen that I know of in UAB history examined thoroughly and used as a political stick in the Roy Moore campaign.

Delete it or not, it's coming like a hurricane and there is nothing we can do about it.
Perfectly acceptable to leave her name.
Breitbart had a related post up 11 hours ago. All hell is gonna break loose tomorrow.
If she settled was there not some clause about perpetuating rumors and speaking publicly about the case?

This.

And I'm pretty sure she has broken that confidentiality clause by speaking to any reference to her case. She could be in deep crap.
I doubt it in today's society.
What was he supposed to say? "Your honor, I took UAB's money to defend the institution and Watson Brown, and I have a legal obligation to do so, and I swore an oath to give my best effort in their interests. But I believe the plaintiff so you should totally rule against my clients."

Doug Jones defended people way worse than this. He was good at his job so the desperate sought him out. We start holding lawyers accountable for the actions of their clients before they were clients, then we've ended the rule of law. Even Watson Brown deserves a competent lawyer and impartial jury.

In this state, just tying Jones to UAB might be more damaging than tying him to statutory rapists.

Hopefully it won't be a very effective attack and so will fade away quickly.

Good thought. If it isn't on a message board, it will disappear from the world.

That theory was tested for many years here on Blazertalk. It was only until recently that some fans stopped denying that the story might be true.
One important difference between what is claimed by Brittany and the Moore accusers is that Moore called all his accusers liars while Jones only said she had no grounds to sue the university's administration because of what happened to her. No one at UAB has ever said the whole thing was a fiction.
That football program was ended in 2014. We have a new football program now.

As for Jones...by all accounts (including the attorney's who was his opponent in the case), he performed his job the way he was expected to.
My mind is spinning trying to figure out if I need to be on any side in this or just stay out of it. (not the thread, just the issue discussed in the thread)

It is strange though how those totally not in the know take it to the extremes.
Just going to leave this right here.

she never should have been admitted to UAB
and I wish I could never hear about this case again
Just more mudslinging back and forth between the two candidates, not caring where or on who the mud lands.

Yep, lawyers have to defend people they think are guilty. Doctors have to save lives they think are worthless. Cops have to treat with fairness with people they think are scum. Etc... Sometimes I too laugh to keep from crying.
