I was reading an article proposing Bret Bielema to Nebraska and thought it wasn't the most insane idea I've ever heard. I realize that 1) Mike Riley is still currently (as of today, 11/15) the head coach of Nebraska football and 2) they'd REALLY like Scott Frost to become the next head coach (more when than if they fire Riley at this point).

This may be the only vacancy we see this year and that isn't a bad thing at all. There has been an absolute ton of turnover in the past 3 years. The only potential changes could be with Illinois (L. Smith) and Indiana (T. Allen) due to "performance". Both seem pretty unlikely for different reason. Smith's buyout is huge and it'd be surprising anyway if he didn't get one more year. Allen just got to Indiana and while the results haven't been great, it'd be shocking if that is all he got. There could be other potential head coaching searches due to someone being picked off by another program. Brohm had a lot eyes on him earlier in the season but that has cooled off a bit now. Perhaps PJ Fleck and his boat rowing take his skills somewhere else? Both seem like a stretch but nothing is impossible. I've also seen DJ Durkin on early Florida lists (WAY down) but they aren't likely to go in that direction.

Here is the list of Coaches salaries and buy outs.

Lovie Smith (Illinois) buyout = $16,500,000
Tom Allen (Indiana) buyout = $2,500,000
Jeff Brohm (Purdue) buyout = $15,844,445 (cost a bunch for someone to get him)
PJ Fleck (Minnesota) buyout = $9,583,333

So what does everyone think? Is Nebraska the only job to open up? Thoughts on a replacement for Riley other than Frost? Anyone is welcome to post stories, rumors or whatever here. Have fun.
Some of the names being thrown about for Nebraska.

Land of 10 : "ESPN’s Adam Rittenberg mentions former Florida coach Jim McElwain, current Arkansas coach Bret Bielema and Wyoming coach Craig Bohl as potential candidates for the Huskers if they have a job opening soon."

Chat Sports : Nebraska Top 5 : Les Miles, Chip Kelly, Ken Niumatalolo, Matt Campbell, Scott Frost (DUH).

Not about Nebraska but Florida Football Scoop : "Steve Spurrier noted that he believes the Gators will have “an excellent coach here in 3-4 weeks,” and then added; “The coach is with his team now. The coach we’re going to hire is probably, I would almost 100 percent say is coaching his team today, this weekend, and through the end of the season, and maybe through the bowl game.” I've seen a few things saying Frost to Florida. Nebraska better have a plan B just in case.
I think Dan Mullen is going to Florida, but that's a hunch based on message board talk. I think Frost would be best for Nebraska. He has recruiting ties to Florida and has coached around the nation. He will bring modern football to a program that feels stuck in the stone age. Bielema wouldn't be a bad consolation and his style of offense would work well with the local talent.

I think Lovie Smith is safe. He's using such a young team and they are showing progress. Next year they should fight for bowl eligibility and that will be the real test. Indiana's coach is in his first year he isn't winless or going through a scandal so I expect him back.

Really, after Riley the only coach I can see gone is Harbaugh and that is because he'd leave for the NFL. I would expect the Colts to really go after him hard, with possibly the Bears and Browns.

All things being equal, I'd have to say that Riley is the only one gone. I know ILL has been God Awful, but Lovie has two things going for them, one is that he has a young team and two is when he took over the cupboard was bare to say the least. If will take time to clean up the mess that was the last regime. Maybe it's just me, but Tom Allen rubs me the wrong way. He's got that "coachy" thing cranked up to 11. Too much of that in your face yelling and harumphing for my tastes.

That being said, if one of the big programs come a calling on a guy like Jeff Brohm or PJ, they COULD leave, but I think you'll see only one change in the end.
If Harbaugh goes 8-4 he’ll definitely be in the hot seat with the fans.

Frost and Nebraska reportedly close to a deal. Wonder what Riley has to say?

Scott Frost's response to this report is exactly what you'd expect him to say.

“That’s just totally false,” Frost said. “I haven’t paid attention to all these whirlwind rumors and everything and I’m not going to. I’ve got an unbelievable team and I’m going to coach them. I can promise you that no decision has been made about anything.”

Yahoo Sports : Frost's response
Nebraska to fire Mike Riley soon, according to SB Nation

Also (from the same article) : "Nebraska is also considering coaches who run the triple-option, flexbone offense, specifically Navy’s Ken Niumatalolo. Sources indicate that if Nebraska approached Georgia Tech coach Paul Johnson, he would recommend Niumatalolo or Army’s Jeff Monken, both his former assistants."
Nebraska has little natural talent in their home state so the triple option is something they can use to make up for the lack of talent such as Georgia Tech and the military academies use due to either high academic standards or a limited recruiting pool. Nebraska should be better than this.

Looking at future non-conference schedules, there are zero Texas schools. Their big non-conference games are against Oklahoma, Tennessee, Colorado, and Arizona. The rest are basically MAC programs split between Ohio schools and Northern Illinois. Nebraska looks like they are trying to be something they aren't, which is a Midwestern classic Big Ten school from the 1980s. Ohio is a great state to recruit from but Nebraska isn't nearby and doesn't have a history there. Illinois is more defensible as they have two intra-division games against Illinois and Northwestern and they aren't historical powers. Nebraska needs to stop pretending to be someone they aren't because the Big Ten needs them to be the historical power they used to be.

But Michigan won the National Championship in September like they always do.
Lovie is the last best hope for Illinois football, they will give him until 2020 to put a winning program on the field. If he can't do it, I do not know anyone who can. If the Illini dont' start winning by 2020, they ought to seriously consider dropping football and investing in an Ice hockey program because Illinois is loaded with talent that has nowhere to play in state.
Hmmm.... lets see

Neb - Job Not safe
Wisc -safe
Iowa-safe
Minn-safe
NW-safe
Pur-safe
ILL- safe for now

Mich-safe
MSU-safe
Indy-safe
OSU-safe
PSU-safe
MD-safe
RUT-safe

Yup, it checks out. Lovie is safe this year, but he needs to start showing some improvement next year.
It really does look like the Nebraska job is going to be the only one that's open. Indiana might be bowl eligible with a win over Purdue (might be now with APR but I'm to lazy to look it up). Illinois is unlikely to fire Lovie with that buyout and all the youth he has on the team. So, unless somebody comes calling for Brohm or Fleck that is going to be it.

Brohm is certainly a possibility but I'm still not sold on Fleck. I think this years results have taken a bit of the shine off him.

I remember in the preseason the commentators speaking about the "cupboard being far from bare" at Minnesota yet they've pretty much been bad this year. Maybe it's not "row the boat" but "abandon ship".

Time will tell, but in 2 years or so we should see if this guy is legit or if he's a carnival barker.

Hot seat with fans...but maybe not so much with the athletic director. Report saying he's in a discussion for a "lifetime contract".

Land of 10 : Harbaugh/UM lifetime contract discussion
PJ Fleck just got an extension so he us probably not going anywhere.

Purdue better get one for Brohm otherwise he might be convinced to go elsewhere.
