According to Gary Parrish, a guy who is obviously connected, the three top players at East HS come with Penny if he's hired at Memphis. This includes the #1 /2 player in the country. Amazing opportunity to turn the Memphis program around. Its right there for Tubby.
Rudd has his man though, lol
Does anyone even know if Penny would take the job if offered?

And I'm sure Parrish knows there is zero percent chance of this happening. Just stirring the pot. 05-stirthepot
So far Tubby and his present recruiting team have zero top 150 recruits in 2016, 2017, and 2018. Pretty big sample size. More of the same means it isn't getting better. Tubby has to know that Saul ain't getting the job after he leaves -- and with the current track record ain't being hired as an assistant anywhere else. Put Saul in another position at same pay. Bring Penny on board and help the program and Saul's future.
I've been hearing this Penny idea for the last couple of years. If we are gonna do it, we better go ahead and do it before the youth being recruited start getting so young they don't even know who Penny is.

Well Tubby has 3 assistants:
-Joe Esposito who's been with him 10 years. It's unlikely that any other coach would hire him. Tubby wouldn't fire him either.
-Played for Tubby and was an assistant at Tulsa, Texas Tech and Memphis. He is probably the only coach that Tubby has on staff that may be able to get a job at another school.
-Saul Smith - coach's son enough said.

So you have 3 assistants that would have low to no demand at other schools. You have a head coach who is very loyal to his assistants and would never get rid of them. Only possible way one of them isn't with us next year would be because of illness or arrest. Even if one were to leave Tubby does have a couple of other sons that he would probably hire before Penny.

I'm pretty sure Parrish is talking about Penny as the head coach...not as an assistant to Tubby.

At this point, desperate times call for desperate measures. If Penny can bring in the right staff....another player-getter, and then two high level X and O guys, this could possibly work.

I wonder if we can fire Tubby tonight if they lose to UALR.

Said it this morning on Calkins show.
And we have a head coach that would not allow the admin to dictate staff to him - just my guess, from what I know about Tubby Smith. And understanding that JP was likely to get another year before he got the GT job despite the pressure to remove him, I'm guessing Tubby will get his full contract term or at least 4 of the 5 yrs before he would face performance dismissal.
Tubby isn't going anywhere this year IMO. The admin will give him a chance to build a team his way (and let the FBI stuff settle)

Right.

There is exactly NO CHANCE that Penny would work for Tubby.

NO.

CHANCE.

Sorry, but I'm at the point that if the choice is to win a close contest against Little Rock or get blown put and start a serious conversation regarding Tubby and his lack of recruiters --- I'm voting lose by 20.

I'm not so sure about that. If this team wins 11-12 games and recruiting doesn't improve, I think he's gone in March.
How much money does Memphis lose in ticket sales and FedExForum attendance money if Tubby stays his full contact term. That amount should be considered when thinking about a buyout of Tubbys contract.
I don't see our admin pulling the plug on Tubby at any point before the end of this season, and I honestly think they'll give him at least three years. But, we're in a bad spot, and Tubby and his staff are doing nothing to give us optimism that this will change for the better.

It's going to take something drastic to turn this around. Hiring Penny would certainly be drastic, and a top recruiting class would certainly help in righting the ship. Penny would need to accept a pretty low contract, given how much we'll be paying Tubbs. Still, I don't see our administration initiating any type of change unless it's demanded by the top-level boosters.
One of East HS players signed with UAB.

Thanks Tubby!

Why do you assume that penny can't coach01-wingedeagle07-coffee3

How depressing is that?!?

Seriously, is there ANY hope for an upward swing in Tiger hoops? Tubby is not going anywhere, he is coasting (not coaching), the games are played in front of one-third full arenas, the local talent is leaving Memphis...and unlike Larry's final years, the Grizz are eating our lunch.
