Just caught up on the game on Facebook -- I'm loving this Stadium Broadcast business. Fantastic quality, all the angles, replay, AND FREE!

Offense
=============
After the first possession, Smalls looked straight up great. I was very, very surprised. Best QB play I've seen from Rice in a long time. He's got a strong arm, good runner, and is actually accurate! Pretty optimistic.

Ellerbe broke some tackles, looked good, exceeded my expectations.

Cephus looks like a strong WR with size. Excited about his future here.

Trammel looks like a good weapon/speedy return guy for us.

Didn't realize the Center has been so consistent.

Defense
===========
I keep thinking of that USM WR catch over Ellis (?). It looks like the guys are being put in the right positions, but are not making the plays.

Overall
==========
This was watch-able, surprisingly. As Owl #'s noted earlier, CUSA is a bad league, perhaps especially on D and it shouldn't take *that* much improvement to go bowling here every year.
Who do we lose this year (graduation)?

Yeah, the offense has definitely found it's footing. Smalls is going to be good. Southern Mississippi has a top 25 defense and they were shredded. All of the skill position players are back next season.
On the other side of the ball we're struggling. Everyone is injured.

Offense: two or three offensive linemen, no skill players.

Defense: Banks, Ellerbee, Shantz, Womac, Green

Overall it's a real young and injured team. We should be okay next season.
At least

Yes, with our new coach, things should finally start improving.

A losing record after ten seasons in a powder puff conference. One win this year, downhill trajectory. It shouldn't matter. But if we still have Bailiff, it will matter.

How did I know you would respond in that manner to that softball?

I wouldn't say he looked "straight up great" but he did do a good job of not turning the ball over and getting the ball to the play makers. I do believe that was the original goal of the QB in this MSO created by Lynch. Arm strength...sorry no arm strength. Average to below average at best. That may be why they had Tyner getting loose at the end again like La Tech. Ran well and got the necessary yards when appropriate. If he will continue to not turn the ball over maybe we have found a slow running back to play QB for us and lead the flightless Owls in the future. Certainly came away form this one feeling much better being Smalls first game he didn't give any points to the opponent. Noticed Tyner not signalling this week and looked like he hit the field as a TE a little so that scholarship is being utilized somewhat(love to see him on the hump and find out what that arm can do over at Reckling) but what is to come of The original #1 QB? Don't see a place for him to move to and if Smalls can stay healthy not sure SG will make it back on the field again while he's at Rice.

That's true. We'll have Gransen back also. But yes Aaron Cephus looks really good.
I agree. I thought Facebook did a tremendous job presenting the game online. The announcers were not bias and everything just looked great. It was better then ESPN and ESPN better be careful because Facebook may be the future in college sports. I hope basketball and other Rice sports will be on Facebook also.

A couple of points. Losing Trey Martin will be huge. He has been exceptional in his senior campaign. We also lose Robbie Wells at Tight End.

On defense, I thought I read that we might get Banks and Schantz back for medical redshirts. Womac will be a big loss, but Kenneth Orji is a true freshman that I think will be a capable replacement at outside linebacker. I would be more concerned about the middle linebacker corp.
Look.... The beauty of change when your program feels like it has bottomed is the theory of the clean slate.... If the powers that be do offer us a change in coaches, it is safe to presume all coaches.... And if that is the case, the entire program gets a shot in the arm of intensity, competition, and the absence of predisposed feelings of the current staff... And even worse yet, the predisposition of an agenda to undermine the integrity of the program through decisions and scheme (ie: the ABO).... The offense is better the last two weeks.... Not because of Smalls (even though he has been ok)... It has been better because the offensive coaches have switched places and maybe even to a larger extent, roles (not to mention: never ever ever.... EVER .... underestimate how bad CUSA is)....

A fresh start makes the players on this roster better. They all need to start from scratch..... It was Jess Neely when once asked (and I'm paraphrasing) "Coach, you should be excited about the fact you have 18 letterman returning"... Neely's reply "Yeah... Off a 2-8 team"...

Everyone needs to re-earn their chops.... Even Jack Fox....

+1. It looks like linebackers will be a need. That would be huge if we get the two injured seniors back. Schantz coming back would ease the loss of Brian Womac. I'm confident in Brian Stewart as the defensive coordinator if he's back.
The best news for next year is that we will still be in CUSA, which means at least 8 winnable games.
