As the 2017-2018 basketball season begins, I thought it would be fun to mark down UAB’s ranking by KenPom.com. UAB starts the season at 155. UAB began last season ranked 89th and finished at 196th. I don’t have the data in front of me, but last season’s drop off had to be one of the worst in the country.

The last time UAB’s preseason ranking was this bad was the 2014-2015 season, when UAB started out at 164. That turned out to be a very exciting year with UAB beating Iowa State in the NCAA Tournament. UAB’s final ranking that season was still a dismal 135.

Pomeroy is projecting UAB will go 11-7 in conference play, and 18-11 overall.

The highest ranked team on UAB’s schedule is Auburn at 46th. Of course Auburn is in turmoil right now. The other OOC teams ranked higher than UAB are Richmond (113), Memphis (132), and Troy (149).

In C-USA, Middle Tennessee (92), ODU (94), and La Tech (96) are all ranked higher.
Richmond played in NIT and put Bama out.
How in the hell is Troy rated higher than us? Am I missing something?

Yep. They beat them 71-64 in Tuscaloosa. The game was tied with less than 10 minutes to go. Richmond won the last 5 minutes of the game 10-3.

While UAB struggled last season, Troy won the Sun Belt Conference Tournament with four straight victories, and played in the Big Dance.

The Sun Belt is ranked several spots above C-USA.

Three of Troy’s top four players from last season are back.
Makes it sweeter when we crush them.
Problem with starting that low and with our schedule is there are not many opportunities to more up much...
The RPI or Ken Pom rankings mean nothing to a CUSA team in its current makeup. We have to win three games.

Last year we needed to win four.
We're better this year. 03-lmfao
That ain't and won't be the same Troy team we are used to playing. We owe Chattanooga some payback.

Hope the team knows that.

Yes, no doubt, much better this year and perhaps one of the most better teams in UAB history. "THIS TEAM IS GOING TO BE GOOD!".
We get to find out if Ehsan can actually coach or not this year. The pessimist in me hasn't had a great outlook for our MBB team the past few years , but here's to hoping!

Sun Belt got a huge win tonight as Georgia Southern beat Wake Forest on the road.

Troy lost at North Dakota by 3. With the game tied, Troy got called for a foul with 3 seconds left on the road. Person and Varnado both had big nights for Troy with 25 and 24 points respectively. A player for North Dakota had 41 points.

Chattanooga lost by 9 at Wyoming.

Troy was favored to win last night at North Dakota, but they came up short by three points. Their loss dropped them to a 162 ranking. UAB improved to 146. So that problem is fixed.

However, Samford is still ranked higher than UAB at 135.
