I know this is too early for many fans and others don’t want to even think about the hoops program after last year’s implosion. However, we are only 2 days away from the season tip-off and the slate is wiped clean for every team.

What can Rowe accomplish in his 2nd year? Will he at least get the program back to where it was before he was hired with a top 3 CAA finish and 20+ wins?

There are 31 regular season games and at least one tournament game in Charleston.

Bring out your best Jimmy “the Greek” prognosticating and tell us where the Dukes will finish.

I will start
21-10 (12-6 CAA)
1-1 in the CAA tournament
I don’t think we know much about the players (or even the coach) at this point, so it’s hard to say. With this many young players and guys playing together for the first time, I am going with 12-19 - OOC schedule will be rough on us again; although, not as rough as last season
37-0, National Champs.

(I mean, if I'm gonna be wrong, might as well be spectacularly wrong)
I barely follow JMU bball (that might change with the new arena), but i'll throw out a completely uneducated guess.

15-16 (7-11 CAA)
1-1 in the tournament
6-7 OOC
8-10 CAA
0-1 tourney

14-18
17-14 (9-9 CAA)
1-1 in the tournament

A slight surprise in how the team responds this year.....

The usual fairly transparent Hart agenda. Set unrealistically high goals so you can then bash coach Rowe for the rest of the year.

I am going to predict that this team will probably start slowly and without major injuries will be a lot better by the end of the year. I am also going to predict that unlike the previous coach, no players will be telling the coach to F off during practice or worse yet doing that in the office in front of the secretaries. I am also going to predict that we will like the effort this team gives every night. I also predict that this coach will never make the brain dead move of having such a severely overloaded class of untalented seniors like last years group. Yoyo was talented but injured early and then out for the year five games into the CAA season.
I will predict less than 7 wins. You get what you pay for, always.
Dukes crush.
15-16 (8-10 CAA)
0-1 CAA Tournament
18-13 (11-7 in CAA)
1-1 in CAA tournament
The decision to hire Lou Rowe certified that JMU is a football school and basketball does not matter

Then how do you account for the new convo and the paying of COA stipends to mens and womens basketball (which is one of the highest COAs in country)? These are basketball only decisions.

Also, how do you account for the grandeur of Veterans Memorial Park and Sentara park (for all other sports) if JMU is a "football school"?

Ordinarily, I'd agree with you on the youngsters, but we stunk last year with a ton of experienced players who played together for years. Figure we really can't be worse and have an upside that should start paying dividends later in the season. I'm thinking optimistically that we can eke out 16-15 and be optimistic by CAA Tourney time. 04-cheers

Last year was some of the worst basketball team play I've seen at almost any competitive level. I don't think coach was prepared to deal with the none x's and o's from his seasoned athletes. The best thing he could have done about game #5 is bench a few of the players indefinitely or until those players decide to change. Attitude, good or bad is contagious, especially with basketball.

After winning their first two at home, they have a pretty rough OCC schedule and don't expect to see many x's in the win column. However I think we see 15 wins in conference. Those OCC games will hopefully pay off come Feb and March.

This is a very "new" team and should be a whole lot of fun to watch based on potential. I think a good season would be 17-14 before they go into the CAAT.
My initial predictions were a joke designed to get some discussion started. I'll chime in with a legitimate complete WAG for JMU's season record prediction before Friday's game.

Expectations are very low for JMU basketball.

Getting back to where JMU was isn't a Mt Everest like climb- above 100 rpi, 20 wins, first round beat down in the CAA tourney, bid to the CIT, an also ran mid major.

I've seen you criticize Mike Houston on these boards yet you hold the Brady era in such high regard. It's a blind spot that you have. With Brady it was always about the players not executing and choking with Rowe it's always about what will he do and things he does wrong as a coach (or even scheduling). Such an agenda- total curmudgeon way of thinking.

I didn't see a lack of effort last year- I saw a lack of talent and ability- guys who really couldn't get past defenders or get their own shot, guys who couldn't finish at the rim. I don't think the guys had poor attitudes- they were trying and buying in they just weren't equipped to win many games without a real go to guy on offense. Sure Rowe and the staff learned too and hopefully they will be better this season as well.
