With nine programs not reporting, UT is second in the MAC at 92nd, with WMU leading at 86th. Outside of the Sun Belt, the MAC is getting crushed by the other non-power conferences. That's why it's ridiculous that people like Matt Campbell get criticized so harshly for accepting a job that comes with a nearly 3x pay increase.

Honestly, I don't know if the potential ROI is enough to justify an increase across the board in the MAC. I think a lot of coaches in the MAC have done great things in recent years while earning way less than their peers in G6 conferences.

I think it is unfair and unreasonable for college operating budgets (and the student's tuition which is the largest source of revenue for those budgets) to justify larger football coach salaries, unless your program or athletic department budget raises enough revenue on its own -or via directed donations - and thus not dependent on student fees or funds from the college operating budget. I believe no MAC football program or athletic department are financially self sufficient, so salaries need to stay inline with overall college and athletic department budgets unless a private donor is willing to pay up.

I agree 100%.
How does the MAC as NY, Michigan, Indiana, Illinois, and Ohio compare in cost of living? I imagine that is partly why Candle doesnt make as much... He doesnt need the capital a Fresno state or SJSU or many coaches need to sustain the higher living they stride for...

I don't recall anyone criticizing him for that reason. I'm sure there's someone.

When we see how much some coaches are willing to leave on the table in order to have quality of life, I expect there's a line everyone in similar position has to draw. I mean, it's entertainment. Stop coaching, next person up. No one needs them in order to keep a business running, keep people employed, personal responsibility to community.... For the most part, it seems a mercenary job. Three years and you're out. It's the fans' fault ultimately. We push them out if they're not meeting some absurd expectation, even though they're strong in the community. We pay them outrageous salaries in the hopes they'll meet those expectations before leaving for "greener" pastures.

I didn't care for HOW Coach Campbell left but I ultimately believed him when he said he and his family liked Ames and that's why he took THAT position.
