Budget cuts keeping Grizzly Marching Band at home

Due to budget cuts in the University of Montana Athletic Department, the band will not be playing music in the annual Griz vs. Bobcats football game. Director of Athletic Bands Kevin Griggs said the annual trip for the marching band was eliminated due to the budget cuts.

“We love to support the team – especially in a big rivalry game like this one – and are saddened that we won’t be able to attend,” Griggs said. “As a band, we will continue to do our best to create an energetic atmosphere at the games.”

UM’s Director of Athletics Kent Haslam said the trip cost the Athletic Department roughly $25,000 for the 130 plus marching band members to attend the game.
Nothing screams "Ready to ditch the Big Sky, go FBS with a brand league like GoFundMe's" to send the Marching Band to the biggest game of the year...
For someone who has been insisting that the Montanas won't go FBS and leave the Big Sky, somehow you are awfully paranoid they will.

FYI, FBS schools often have GoFundMe fundraisers for bands and cheerleaders for trips. Bands simply are expenses, not revenue producers except for certain HBCU bands.

UND's AD just retired. Expect the new one will come from Mich St (assist AD) and former UND QB and TV Sports announcer that is the hand picked choice of our prospective billionaire stadium donor.

I'm curious, does anyone have an example of that EVER happening?

Google shows a Gofundme to pay the K-STate band's fine for *maaaaybe* reenacting the STarship Enterprise sodomozing the Kansas Jayhawk.

So has it ever happened that an FBS school band had a GoFundMe to play at their biggest rival's stadium?

They have sent the band every year for decades. Without having to resort to GoFundmes. Athletic Department stated it was due to budget cuts they can't afford it this year.

Not paranoid at all. Just like pointing out how delusional you are.

So the band insists on overnight accommodations in Bozeman for a three hour bus trip? It's crazy spending like this that coliege admin types insist on eliminating. If the overnight cost for a drunken binge is eliminated, the trip would be a couple thousand, but some posters are free spenders of others money. The game is in the afternoon so no reason to be overnight.

Even without the overnight trip (which they haven't done in the last two trips) it is still 17K.

Three charter buses, game tickets, Lunch, add up quickly. A marching band is part of the landscape of college football.
It's a way for Montana to get more tickets to keep their higher paying donors rather than have to pay for their band. It's not like this is the Potato Bowl with plenty of tickets. Tickets are in demand from both schools and this is just a ruse to use those band tickets elsewhere.
Is this a joke thread...

Some posters are so worried about the Montanas leaving the Big Sky that they will post anything they think substantiates their viewpoint that the Montanas stay put.

Wait a minute, isn't UND the school that couldn't afford to send its band and cheerleaders to the NCAA basketball tournament last year? Didn't they also find a local Utah High school who gladly sent their pep band to fill their spot? Sometimes the jokes just right themselves on here.

The UND band was already committed to the Frozen Faceoff at Minneapolis's Target Center for the NCHC tournament. Our hockey orientated school doesn't know how to do The Big Dance. Maybe Phil Jackson will help us, as he's now unemployed.
Were there financial improprieties that is causing this at UM?

No one is worried about the Montanas leaving the Big Sky.

No. There has been dropping enrollment for the past few years(24% since 2010) and fewer students means less student fees collected. At the same time the MT legislature cut all the universities budgets because of lower state revenues.

I was wondering how you would spin the UND situation, good to know some things never change.

Oh, couldn't find any GoFundMe requests from FBS schools sending their bands and cheerleaders. Probably because it doesn't happen.

Montana? They are short money right now. The enrollment decline is killing them.

So for a know it all like you, who is going to be the replacement for IPFW in the Summit?

Oh yeah, you are on record on that IPFW is absolutely thrilled with the Summit League and the tournament site. If IPFW leaves, your IQ and insight suddenly slip below zero. As usual, your reading comprehension is just horrible, but what can one expect from an SDSU grad?

Kind of like you with your WAC FBS?

Idaho, the Montanas, and UND want FBS as a group but want similar schools. Thought the WAC was the only way, but Liberty showed a different path when this whole board said that wasn't possible. A Summit of fb playing schools wanting FBS will not be denied in spite of the collective "wisdom" of this board.
