I mean in general? Is this an advisorial relationship or what? I would think the largest money makers would be able to write the specs for not only investigating themselves but for others. I mean, when you have NCAA investigative personnel being able to be hired by Universities how great can the relationship be?
I would imagine that some “people” would receive information before others. Relationships help. I would imagine that NCAA “people” would pass along all information they receive from the FBI (both on and off the record). I would imagine anything official or unofficial learned by the NCAA would be passed on to every member no matter the sport. That’s how it has always worked right?
One of the (since fired) persons who was named but not indicted in the federal prosecution was an Alabama assistant AD whose previous job was in compliance at the NCAA.

There might be other close ties between the NCAA and member schools that motivated the feds to make sure the NCAA was in the dark until the indictments were released.

There might be obstruction of justice charges brought against them in this scenario. Only a fool would do this.
There is no separate "NCAA" from its member schools.

The members of the NCAA are the NCAA. I am never shocked by how many people don't realize this. The members (especially the P5 members) write the rules of the NCAA, if they wanted to make it within the rules to pay players and let players have low GPA's they would.

Please see UNC.
Accommodations!
Please also understand that the school I cheer for hired someone from the NCAA investigative division. There is a difference on how schools are treated even within this "self governance".

Better to hire strategically than to hire smart.
Strategic hires will get and keep you out of trouble.
Smart hires will allow you to chose the wood you want to die in fire in.
I don't understand the question. The P5, as a group, have some autonomy. Individual P5 schools do not.

Hiring someone that worked in enforcement at the NCAA office sounds good. They should know all the rules. On the other hand, they would also know all the loop holes and technicalities to work around those rules.

I doubt the FBI had any discussions with the NCAA. This was a "sting" operation. People in the NCAA office might be involved. You don't want people in the NCAA office tipping off members that they are being investigated by the FBI.

Total speculation on my part and I'm probably wrong and I'm talking out my azz like all of my posts are but..........

When announcements are moved from one day to the next you have to wonder why. Accommodation for the Press? Accommodation for the school? Accommodation for the actors? So the FBI has no reason to not be accommodating to parties not directly involved with their work.

But it could mean the world to the narrative!
This subject really has nothing to do with the FBI. It has to do with the NCAA and how they conduct their business. Deals are made and punishment is levied and accommodations matter.
That the FBI is a new component in this relationship and sop just provides a highlight.
Consider it an MRI with contrast.

I think I understand... my answer would be yes, there is a history of schools reporting other schools. Are there scenarios where school X gets reduced our punishment for providing intel on school Y? That is not out of the question but it is a little too "tin foil hat" conspiracy for me.

I love when Louisville fans start up the conspiracy theories. No conspiracy, you cheated multiple times and got caught. Was their a conspiracy to get Bernie Maddof? No, he broke the law and got caught.

So what conspiracy did I present?

The federal investigation is relevant because when juicy evidence discovered by the feds becomes public, it forces the NCAA and/or its members to act. The coaches in these federal indictments would still be employed and not suspended, the players named would be eligible and practicing with their teams, if the information in those indictments had never become public.

In most incidents that don't involve federal criminal investigations, minor violations are overlooked because "everyone does it". School X doesn't want the NCAA sniffing around rival School Y's boosters if it means that someone will retaliate by turning in School X in for the same petty violations, etc. So when a booster gives a job to an athlete's mom in exchange for the athlete committing to School Y, even if School X's coach is pissed because he lost out on that recruit he keeps quiet because he's got guys on his team who have similar deals.

But when the feds use their vastly superior leverage to uncover dirt that becomes public, the NCAA and the schools are heavily pressured to not look the other way.

I'll use the school I cheer for as an example (though there are many), why was Tom Jurich out of town at the time this stuff was "announced"?
Did Kinkos not have the FBI charts ready for a Friday announcement?
Accommodations are made. No conspiracy.

So the FBI shares its info with the NCAA because they had charts at the news conference? Is Jurich always in Louisville and him not being there odd?

Bring up UK and Cal a couple of times, then we'll be at peak Louisville post.
This is a run of the mill FBI investigation into bribery, wire fraud, mail fraud and tax evasion.

The fact that it involves college athletics is irrelevant to this investigation. This is no different than any other white collar crime investigation.

The Feds don't care about the NCAA, individual schools, players, coaches or AD's.

They care about uncovering evidence of crimes and obtaining convictions.
