Is he the guy moving forward?

We’ve now seen all 3 of them in extended time in live action and I have to say, his skill set probably fits our offense the best.

I love some of the things Santa has done, especially his touch on the deep ball, but outside of that, he hasn’t done much of anything with his feet and they barely run any QB read option with him which is a huge part of the offense.

Childers plays with no fear and just has a confidence about him. His athleticism today was impressive and some of those deep balls he threw in the rain were great throws (though the int he threw at the end was a duck). It will be interesting to see who Carey goes with at UB. (Watch It be Graham if he’s back healthy haha)

Childers couldn't connect on anything beyond 10 yards. But he certainly is athletic and brings back the read-option offense that we pretty much abandoned when Santa plays. Santa's skillset was not conducive to this rainy game. His strength is passing and we weren't going to do much of that in this game. Our offensive line wasn't opening any holes to have a power run game so playing Childers gave us a different dynamic.

He sure looked like JL6 running the ball

JL would've had 200+ against these guys. It was tough conditions throwing the ball but Childers was still effective. He should be the guy going forward but Santa has strengths, too. He just needs to be managed actively by the coaching staff and they' haven't done a good job of it. Childers showed that he can be a one-man show. Let's see what the kid's got.

Santa's strength is passing? WOW. If true, they can't play him.

My guess they play Graham next week.

If you have 2 QBs you have none. We have 3.

Buffalo and Howard both put up more points against KSU than we did today. Childers looked good against a very average team. He adds an interesting dimension. He made a nice throw on his first TD; the TD throw to our TE was not a good throw, bit a great catch.
Tough call; Santa has played in 1 loss in his short career and it was against the highest ranked team (#19) we have played in a while. Tough to pull Santa based on his body of work, and what he has accomplished. No matter who they start, the next guy has to be ready. At some point in this season, Santa will have to make a play against a quality opponent like he did against Nebraska. He has to be ready. Childers skills may become more valuable as the weather turns. Strange that at the end of camp, Thompson was actually ahead of Childers.

I was thinking we may see more Childers with the weather forecast for today’s game, but I was not expecting to see him at QB for most of the game. The O clearly needed a spark and Childers certainly provided that spark today! After Santa threw his pick, I said that is it; he is done for today.

Do we now have a full-fledged QB controversy? The Chicago Tribune sure seems to think so (for what that is worth).

Childers showed a lot of poise, and certainly did not look like a RS FR today. He has good arm strength, but needs to put some air under/touch on his deep passes; I think Tears should have come up with the one long pass, but the others were simply too long. It is clear he is the best running QB; note to Childers: I appreciate the toughness/effort, but please no more flipping type tackles – he is going to get killed taking hits like that! I thought it was interesting that the coaches seemed to open the play book in the second half for Childers; it seemed that they wanted to see how he would handle playing QB with the whole pay book. He responded well, and you certainly have to love his effort and enthusiasm! We certainly needed his running, as the O line did not show up today; Carey correctly noted after the game the Kent St. defensive line won the battle in the trenches.
Childers forces the defense to account for his running ability. We are turning the ball over too much; that makes 5 picks in the last 2 games. Carey’s conversation with Childers after his pick was certainly animated –I had a very good view as Childers came off the field after throwing the pick and Carey certainly had plenty to say to him. I had no problem with it; it was a bad decision by Childers.

So, where do we go from here? IMO Graham is not the guy; we know what we have with him, and while I like the way he handles himself/seems like a quality young man, he just does not have the skills, and I don’t see him improving. In fact, for some reason Graham seems to have taken steps backwards. Santa is very good at deep routes, but he sure struggles with shorter routes, and in the red zone has struggled several times. I see the Childers and Santa picks today being quite similar in terms of the pattern, the passes and bad decisions. IMO, Carey is right about Childers having the more complete skill set, and he forces defenses to defend against his athleticism, both in terms of QB runs and scrambles. So, what will Carey do; go with one or the other or go with a situational rotation type of QB play? The situational rotation type of QB play has a lot of issues, and I am not in favor of that. Tough call; I like the dynamics that Childers brings, and it is the type offense that we have had so much success with.

That means nothing. The wind and the rain made things a lot more difficult.

It should be Childers going forward until / if he plays himself out of the position. Hopefully, he will keep improving.

Agreed. In addition to the continuing special teams and turn overs woes, my biggest concern today was the O line. It did not matter who the RB was today; the O line gave very few running lanes the whole game.

Kent has size and physicality on the DL. We didn't have much success running the ball last year either. It was all Santa.

Good points. It is almost inevitable we will need both Santa and Childers at times during the season, and both need to be ready. As the weather gets worse, Childers may be more of the go to guy. Yes, Thompson was ahead of Childers, but not now; is that Thompson falling back or Childers improving?

Childers showed a little of what he is capable of doing today. He signed with Memphis in 2015 while Justin Fuente was building a juggernaut there so it would appear that he has some talent. He has progressed to the point that the coaches have confidence that he can give the team a chance to win a game but that goes against the belief of some on this board that the coaches are trying to find ways to undermine this team.

They can confirm that belief by starting Graham when Childers and Santa are healthy...

Maybe Thompson can be the new wildcat QB to minimize the beating Childers will take...

Can Childers hit the deep ball? He didn't today, though that might have been the wind. I think the lack of anything close to a consistent passing attack allowed Kent State to concentrate on stopping the run.

Childers is a really tough kid but his accuracy today wasn't very good. A lot of the completed passes were great catches. Santacaterina gives you the deep threat, a good running back combined with deep passing is a serviceable offense. With our defense that's all we should need.

You don’t think the heavy rain had anything to do that as well?? I mean come on, it was obvious any team is going to run in that weather regardless who your QB is
