Ok we are 3-0 but I don't see the wheels falling off the wagon for the Dukes. After an obviously amazing 2016 I was already sold and we did extend him and his assistants but with what he proved during this week with the handling of Trai Sharps situation, I am just blown away by MH. He is far more valuable to jmu than all the wins. In order to realize who single handedly brings in more eyes and attention to jmu it is undoubtedly MH. Time to give him the Bobby Wilder treatment which is a 10 year contract and multi year contracts. Why not right?

I thought MH and assistant coaches got a raise after last season.
Regardless, we need to throw everything we have at this guy to keep him. Can we get some help from the Alpha Dogs with this?
Sometimes you have to spend money to make money. He brings a winning program and sellouts will be more and more common. GameDays in Harrisonburg are possible. Quite possibly gives us a better chance at a better conference.
We keep MH around, the sky is the absolute limit for this team.
I think with each championship, or really even as "early" as a semifinal exit, he still warrants an extension. I do think they shouldn't be doing it in week 3 of his second year though, unless Jeff has serious reason to suspect he's being poached mid-season.

It'll get done. It just doesn't have to be done in week 3. They just extended him one year at the end of last season, gave him a raise and his assistants raises except for the two who left.

Ha ha!

I was thinking one specifically for bribing...errr...make that funding...yes, funding, that sounds better...Mike Houston to stay at JMU. 04-cheers
He was just extended and given a 25% raise. He made right around $390k last year, and will make over $450k this year if JMU repeats.

He also picks up the following retention bonuses next year : "If Houston stays at Madison for three seasons, he is entitled to a $75,000 bonus. After his fourth season, Houston would receive an additional $93,750, and if he completes the duration of his contract, he would receive another $81,250."

So, he has the potential to earn well north of $500k in the years following 2017.

It is important to reward him and the staff for strong performance. I imagine JMU will continue to be proactive in raises/extensions with continued success.

Exactly. They have to win first.

And, we can always raise student fees if needed to fund a bonus. 05-stirthepot

haha, yeah, just thought I'd throw that in there. Probably wouldn't hurt if we could have an earmarked "Mike Houston bonus" or pledged dollars that he'll get if he stays until 2019, 2020, 2021, etc. Just read what 2004 posted about Houston's contract. So...basically what his contract already states, but either be able to chip in extra the longer he stays or help Athletics pay that extra bonus. I think it would be tough for JMU to hit something north of $600-700k even with a ton of bonuses (while remaining in FCS with Bridgeforth at its current capacity), however, if they did hit that much, I think it would make it much tougher for him to leave. Going from $400k to $1MM is a big difference. Going from $650k to $1MM isn't nearly as big of a jump.

Don't worry. There will be 10 new threads about the same topic and two new unverified breeze op-eds.

Yeah, it's funny how that math thing works. 04-cheers
