I'll be there, been waiting for this game for a long time. I'm not looking for a win but solid play at all 3 phases against good competition. At some point BW needs to coach against a P5 team and last longer than 1 quarter. I'm hoping its this game. I'm also looking for a motivated O-line to really protect their new QB. Kids got game and we need to keep him upright. Either way tailgating will be a blast and looking for a good ODU turnout.

I thought about that but it makes me think its even more sad that we were able to do that with mostly FCS recruits. Only 2015 NC state was the other close one. Recently is been over after the first quarter.

Just a matter of timing, and three are only two chances per year, minus Ian unlikely bowl matchup.

Our next best chance is next season vs. ECU. Oh, wait, you said P5 not P6. LOL

Really @UVA in 2019 is the next most likely followed by Wake Forest in 2020.

ODU vs. ECU 38-52 year 2013
ODU vs. Pitt 24-35 year 2013
ODU vs. NC State 34-46 year 2014
ODU vs. Vanderbilt 28-42 year 2014
ODU vs. WKU 51-66 year 2014

These are the games we competed in with mostly FCS players and came close to beating a P5 or a good G5 team.
The only takeaway from all of those close FBS games: A very good QB can cover over a multitude of other problems.

Just to add this, ODU had a rash of bad luck with offensive linemen too:
David Born was a fantastic OL before he had a career ending knee issue.
Tyler Fisher was shaping up to be a great OL before he had career ending knee issues.
Raul Martinez was one of our top OL recruits before he suffered a career ending injury.
Mason Halter was going to fill a huge need for the team at OL and flipped to the University of Florida two months before Fall practice started.
Devin Hannan was one of our most talented and physical OL before he got kicked off the team.

Maybe this is just football, but in the last few years the coaches have missed on a quite a few offensive linemen and the talented ones they did have dropped off the team for various reasons. This has led to a young line that is still developing. We only lose one OL after this season.

I think you are missing the mark. A very good qb isn't covering deficiencies, its a requirement for beating other good teams.

Cal made mention to how badly the position was recruited by Dee and that is why Malone was brought in last year. It will take another year before we start seeing the difference the change has made.

We are better at every position now than we were in 2013, EXCEPT at QB and OL.

There will always be an ebb and flow to most programs, even with the same coach - just look at Marshall.
We will never have another TH, but we will have good quarterbacks.

Our defense WAS predictably less than stellar for a long time, but has steadily improved in recent years.

My real concern is the offensive line.
Some on here have stated that Bill Dee "left the cupboard bare". If that is the case, we need to concentrate at that position.
As Giles stated, a good QB can make an OL look better; and that opens up the run making it look better even more.
However, looking at the vids from Albany and Umass; right now this line is very slow.

We must get an FBS OL, and I think we will.

A very good QB does/is both.

The difference being we had an NFL type QB that carried the team.

I think it was a combination; recruiting could have been better, but the good ones we had got injured; as the other poster mentioned. Fisher was possibly an all conference guard.
Im not going to name names, but if you go back and watch some Heinicke highlights. We had a certain RT that was regularly beaten, but Heinicke either A) got rid of the ball or B) slid around in the pocket to buy time(which he was fantastic at)

FWIW, our other QBs have not been as good at these two things. Even Washington wasn't that great at moving around in the pocket, but what he would do is just throw it up to whatever receiver was running deep whenever he felt any pressure (or ran). That is part of the reason why he's completion percentage was a bit low, but his yards per pass was relatively high.

Part of it is youth for sure, but neither Larussa and especially not Hoy has shown this type of ability. They stare receivers down and then let the pocket collapse on them. If you don't throw the ball within 2 seconds, you better either move around to buy more time, run, or find the quickest check down. I don't think either QB went through their reads very quickly, it has to be almost instant. Have an idea pre snap what the defense is going to do and react accordingly. Hoy/Larussa were lost if their first read was covered. I think we saw Williams do a much better job at this, which was also mentioned by Wilder. Even though you are not the primary read, Williams may throw you the ball. We saw how much he spread the ball around....Ellison, Patterson, Fulgham, Cox (who dropped 2), etc.

And we have to find a better way to get chunk yards. Find better ways to get the ball in Harpers hand. I think we saw Sinclair move up the depth chart because of his ability to get big gains. Outside of Heinicke, we've never been an offense to really slowly manuever downfield. We are an offense that A)protects the ball and B)has big plays.

VT 80 ODU 21

I see VT really laying it on thick. They need to do better against us then an unranked UNC did if they want to maintain or increase their position.

I'm rooting for ODU though but don't think things will go well for the Monarchs.
IF VT scores 80 on us, we need to forfeit the season.

Sheesh. Some of you are acting like VT is the Michael Vick VT. This not even one of the two or three best teams in the ACC, and frankly, I wouldn't be surprised if they are closer to the middle of the pack.

Just my thoughts on whats going to happen.

Now do I want that to happen? No. But I also prefaced it with a reason as to why I think it will go that way. Don't get me wrong, I'll still be rooting for the home team as I'd love to get a win over a P5 team. Added bonus it will color Vicks celebration with a loss.
You are crazy to think they will put up 80 on ODU. The defense will come out strong. They only put up 27 on Delaware. ECU really is that bad. Like I said

Was talking with my boss (VT alumn and goes to every home game and both his kids went or are going there currently) and I was telling him I'm happy if we lose by less than 30 and get out healthy. He said one word... "JMU." Anything can happen.

Hoping you forgot the sarcasm symbol....s/. If not, I have to question the amount of thought you put into this prediction. If we can't play them as least as close as Delaware, we need to drop football period.
