This remains a great phrase:

they sentenced UAB to coach Neil Callaway, who breathed death into the program. He left in 2011, with an 18-42 criminal record.

That's solid writing right there.

Might be nicely written, but it isn't fair.

As somebody that once hosted a Neil Callaway "Call-Away" phone marathon to raise awareness for FireNeilCallaway.com (a website I also created), I can say that I was, in many ways, wrong about Callaway. He was not head coach material, for sure, but he was just over his head. I don't think he ever meant to hurt the program and cared deeply for the players.

Garrick McGee, on the other hand, was absolute poison - and actively took steps to weaken the program (outside of coaching football games). McGee's sole redemption was that he left in time for us to hire Bill Clark. That's right...the only thing McGee ever did right was leave.

Callaway tried his best and did some things right...it just didn't translate to wins.
It's very fair. Callaway conspired with Paul Bryant Jr. to get the job. He conspired with Paul Bryant Jr in stabbing Pat Sullivan in the back. He conspired with Paul Bryant Jr to turn away Jimbo Fisher after he had already accepted the job. He then Conspired with Paul Bryant Jr. to get a contract extension when we were begging for permission to fire him, something we acquiesced to only when Paul Bryant Jr gave us the false choice of shutting down the program if we fired him, or getting an own campus stadium that Paul Bryant Jr. promised to help pay for if we gave Callaway an extension.

It doesnt matter how nice Callaway was, or how well meaning Callaway was, he was complicit in turning what should have been a shot in the arm for UAB footbal into a **** show that left long time fans and boosters more depressed than we were over the nearly three years it took to get rid of of Watson. We didnt seek Callaway out for the head coaching job, we only interviewed him at all because Paul Bryant Jr. asked us as a favor to him to help get Callaway's name out there as a head coaching candidate. That was what the UAB administration was told. We didnt know the fix was in. Black friday and its disatourous effect on our football program, Callaway getting hired, Callaway getting an extension, The promised stadium that was always a lie, the refusal to even consider the stadium when we jumped through every hoop they asked, then finally, the shutting down of UAB football. It's all part of the same story. So Screw Neil Callaway.

Damn right. All part of the Lost Decade of UAB athletics. Hopefully the turnaround (on the field) begins Saturday because right now we're a golf school. Everything else kinda sucks.

And he gave us the finger! Me, Attalla, Smaug, DoktyrX, Matrix and a couple of others. And just because we shouted "Resign!" at him.
Ha I remember that.
Me too. When he gave us the finger, all I could do was chuckle. I simply had no other response to a guy who was about to be fired giving a group of us the finger.
