Goodbye, Jackson, Ashby and Maury Halls.

http://www.breezejmu.org/news/jmu-furthe...87d77.html
Typical Breeze effort (meaning it's about half right). For starters, the Ashby monument does not "honor" Ashby's contributions as a Confederate soldier. It marks the location where he was killed in the Battle of Harrisonburg, a historical event. It also predates ownership by JMU.
I'm certainly not in favor of touching the ashby death marker. It's in a historical context. It's not different then a museum in that respect.
I'm beyond tired of this entire, "issue," personally. A lot of nothing to do about nothing by people with too much time on their hands. I'd prefer JMU just stay out of it but would appear that won't be the case. I seem to recall a really good freshman year course I took at jmu about logical fallacies, I'd imagine the professor of that class has no shortage of material these days.

Perhaps beginning with your post? 04-cheers

"A lot to do about nothing"? You might want to rethink that line.
Haha I was tired. :)

I agree. It's different than the statues erected for purposes unrelated to the ground on which they sit.
Given Jon Alger would not allow Christian songs at the JMU Christmas Concert.

It seems clear where he is going to land on this matter.

There's not one matter. There's a bunch of separate things to consider. If you have one opinion about every single confederate-affiliated name in any setting, you're a moron & part of our country's problem.

From where I sit, there's at least logic behind the push against monuments/statues that glorify the war's losing side. Not saying I agree with that side, because I absolutely don't in certain instances.

That same logic is COMPLETELY absent when ignorant people start talks about tearing down the historical marker where Ashby died. Historical context matters a lot.

I swear, some of the smartest people are absolute morons when it comes to thinking through individual issues & making their own decisions based on facts & logic. Someone has brain-washed them (left & right) into thinking their general political leaning makes these decisions for them. It's really tiring to hear the same stupid tiring talking points from people using no brain-power.

+1
was anybody ever offended by the names of those buildings before this week? I'd love to hear from someone that was, because your perspective would be good to learn...but it seems that people have been told they should be upset, so here comes the emotional politics

our history is checkered, but attacking symbols and words...will get temporary emotional relief - and then what? nothingness...it's not real change...this energy could go to productive change...

The madness at UVA - covering statues and demanding that TJ come down...really hope this doesn't infect JMU

James Madison had slaves ...
Woodrow Wilson supported KKK...
Confederate generals were honored (it was more about state rights than just slavery, but that's lost on everyone...)

Stupid, terrible things have been done and said, but still great men and part of our history - the legacy of Jimmy on this country is unbelievable...expunging that history may set us up to repeat it, eh?

I believe this is what Hyper was talking about re: terrible political talking points and a lack of logic and reason. These are bad takes and you should feel bad.

shh, dont tell anyone who Wilson Hall is named after.
A coworker is a W&L grad...let's see what happens with that one.

When is the TJ statue on W&M's campus coming down?

When is UVA going to condemn the nickname, "jeffererson's university?

Trump supports the KKK, so I guess that makes it all okay now?

Can we please move this thread to OT now. I'm sick of hearing about this and now this has the potential to get nasty with the above comments. I'd prefer to come here and talk sports.

I'm all in favor of that. I avoid political topics and wish others would be bothered to extend the same courtesy to other posters. Hburg has to move or remove threads ultimately.

I'm not a Trump guy- but that's stretching the truth at best. Regardless, where does it end? What should be the new name of our school be? UVA-Harrisonburg? NW VA State?

I'd say it ends when confederate figures stop being memorialized as heroes and their references contain historical context, typically within museums and history books.

No one is going after James Madison, so please stop taking it to such a ridiculous extreme.

It's not a ridiculous extreme. I think you're premise needs to be amended to, "No one is going after James Madison YET."
