In life timing is extremely important. How fortunate it is that this announcement could be timed essentially with what could be a UNC probation.

In life timing is extremely important. How fortunate it is that this announcement could be timed essentially with what could be a UNC probation.

I'm not a Duke fan by any means, but am partial to Cutcliffe and to strong academic schools. Wallace Wade only seats 40,000. Besides increasing stadium size and regular attendance, what would Duke have to do to be considered for the SEC at the end of the ACC GOR? I mean on its own. I assume stadium growth and becoming much more consistent on the football field would be a start.

They wouldn't have to do anything. The SEC would take them now. But what they are doing is setting up their options moving forward. By 2036 both the SEC and B1G would be interested. The B1G because Duke is popular in New York and has a following in New England in addition to being a entry into and a possible lure for North Carolina. We would be interested because of their academics and because of their value as a brand and as a lure for North Carolina.

When the ACC was threatened when Maryland left Bubba Cunningham contacted Birmingham to make sure if the worst happened that UNC and Duke could come as a pair to the SEC. I hear we said, "yes".

The still wouldn't have to do anything and for the same reasons. If they build a bigger stadium and get serious about sports that just means the downside of taking them is lessened. But overall their academics and national branding in basketball, not to mention they are located in North Carolina would all trump anything we speak of when considering Kansas. Heck they even outdraw Kansas in football.

Duke has spent a good chunk of money upgrading their facilities especially football but you have to keep things within the proper prospective. They didn't spend 300 million plus on football but on their entire athletic dept with some 100 million or so on their endowment. Duke was bottom 3 in the ACC & the upgrades barely get's them in the top 10 of the league if that

I understand. But their football stadium was truly substandard for most, if not all P conferences. Anything they could do was going to be an improvement. And, I don't blame them for putting the 100 million in their endowment either. I would think the eventual goal of all schools would be to endow their stipends.

No doubt, the 100 million was just for their sports endowment since I didn't make that clear.
