At the age of 4, I learned to swim at the East Lake Pool which was on the east end of the East Lake. The pool had a sand bottom and was fed by a spring entering at the eastern end. The water moved through portals into the lake on the western end. From the lake, it flowed by spillway into nearby Village Creek.

Occasionally a water moccasin would come into the swimming area through a portal, and it was common for small fish to nibble at your legs. The city later filled in the pool area and built a replacement rectangular pool nearby which was chlorinated. Do they still use the old bath houses?

It was in the 1920s and 30s that B'ham annexed West End, Highland, Woodlawn, East Lake, Roebuck and Ensley. Ensley staged a large mock funeral march to protest being brought into B'ham. The Ensley clothing store Goldstein and Cohen used printed envelopes addressed to their store in "Ensley, Alabama" for many years.
