Last year, Smith and his staff didn’t secure their first commitment until guard Jamal Johnson announced his intentions on Sep. 12. Given the uncertainty surrounding the program this offseason, and seven new scholarship players on the roster who could eat up potential playing time, the Tigers may have to wait longer.
Lomax, for instance, told The Commercial Appeal he plans to wait until after this season begins to commit in order to better judge the new players at Memphis. Keep an eye on 7-foot-4 center Connor Vanover of Little Rock, Ark., who said in April that Memphis had been recruiting him harder than any school this spring.
Other names Memphis will be watching over the next month include Atlanta wing Isaiah Kelly and his 6-foot-10 AAU teammate Michael Durr, as well as Georgia-based guard Trey Doomes and 6-foot-6 wing D.J. Stewart of Benoit, Miss.

He never publicly framed it quite like that. But if you heard it with your own ears, how can anyone argue?
He absolutely did say that. He basically said that he needs other players around him and that he wants to see what kinda guys he'll have around him. Said he won't make a decision until around conf play. His father confirmed this as well. That doesn't exactly bode well . . .
