The USA Today has released its annual report on NCAA finances.* Below I have cut out the numbers for teams in the AAC. The first number represents revenue, then expenses, amount from student fees and the last is the percentage of total AD budget taken from student fees.

Couple of thoughts:
- Obviously one of the reasons we rely so much on subsidies from the university is due to the fact that we have a crappy media deal, don't have a generous portion of revenue from the CFP and our bowl pay outs suck. It is was it is.
- If we are stuck outside the P5 looking in (as it looks to be the case), it will be interested to see how these numbers will change in the ensuing years with the AAC getting a new media deal in 2020. I expect the AAC will get a modest bump (meaning another mil or two at best) but we will still be hurting.
- For those that know, ECU will be slashing their AD budget by 10%.
- It will be interesting to see how much our revenue grows after the Shoe is re-opened. The school is anticipating more revenue due to more premium seating and amenities. We are going to need every penny we can get.
- Holy cow Miami, NKU and Wright State. I did not realize just how much they are sucking off teat.

How can the revenue numbers be well over $10 million higher than what UC's own budget reflects?

for 2017, $48 million in expenses.....A little over $30 million in revenue....a little over $17 million in student fees.

Dunno. That number always seem to fluctuate depending on the source. I am guessing the same is true everywhere else as well.

My guess is that USA Today report is full of creative fiction.

What the Office of VP for Finance at UC releases is gospel.

Probably contains Big East buyout money. That was not all payable in one year.

Correct, but that would still be captured in UC's revenue. The official financial report I linked to shows where all the dollars are.

That's a strategic choice. They don't have to spend the money, but they're constantly updated facilities, hiring new people in the AD (both coaching staff and professional staff), and generally trying not to overtly jump over the "Non-Profit" designation.

100% correct.

They budget to spend the boatload of excess, we budget to make up a shortfall.

When you want to see largesse writ large and the accompanying built in advantages on the field and in recruiting, just look at the size of the off field scouting, recruiting, development, etc staffs of programs like ND, Alabama and OSU. They have double and triple the number of folks in those programs. It's the new loophole to exploit for the deep pockets.

By way of example, Notre Dame has a total of 45 people on the football staff including 10 on-field coaches, 10 strength & conditioning staffers, six graduate assistants, 16 football operations staffers and three off-field/recruiting staffers.

Schools like UC are lucky to have 18-20 total including the coach's receptionist and personal assistant.

They also have to pay for tattoos, since they are no longer gratis.

Yep. OSU funds 35 sports programs and has over 1000 student athletes enrolled on campus. UC funds 17 sports programs.
