This is something which has been interesting to me over the past few years, the popularity of sports locally and nationally.

We all know the NFL is a huge #1 nationwide, by leaps and bounds except for a few southern states. But the #2 sport in popularity is a question. It could be college football, the NBA, or baseball, depending on where you live and other characteristics.

All 3 of those sports have a real claim to the #2 position when you look at social media, TV rating and other stats. The Olympics is first tier every two years when they have it.

Where does soccer rate? It's in the top 5 or 6 in most parts of the country, along with the NHL and college basketball. I feel those sports though are a tier below the NBA, college football, and baseball, given they are popular in certain parts of the country but not nationwide, except during the World Cup and at the end of seasons. Golf could also be in that too.

10-15 years ago, NASCAR and golf were almost first tier sports. Now, NASCAR I feel is 3rd tier. UFC is as popular as NASCAR. Tennis is also in that tier.

What do you feel about the most popular sports?
Presently I live in Utah and with 5 D 1 schools in the state I would say college football and basketball top the list, followed closely by the NBA due to the Jazz. NFL is next and MLB is 5th. When I lived in Colorado it was the NFL first followed by MLB, college football and hoops, NBA and NHL.

Here in Wisconsin, I'd be pretty safe in saying that the NFL is the undisputed king.

After that, probably college football, MLB, college basketball, then the NBA leading the pack of the also-rans.
Here is a Harris Poll from 2015. It appears that MMA was not a separate choice.

It is pretty much what I expected.
NFL
MLB
CFB
Auto Racing
NBA
NHL
MLS
CBB

No surprise that the NFL showed an increase. I find it surprising that auto racing, hockey and soccer are the only sports with positive changes.
Here college football is #1. The NFL is second banana.

I'll add my own personal observations specific to the southeast in stock market form:

Buy: MLS, CFL, NCAAFB, College Baseball
Hold: NASCAR, NCAAMBB
Sell: NBA, MLB (the incompetent ownership of the Braves is leading to mass casual fan bleedout), NHL
Short: WNBA
Delist: Arena Football, NCAAWBB

Canadian Football is a big draw in your area?
Hold: NASCAR, NCAAMBB
Sell: NBA, MLB (the incompetent ownership of the Braves is leading to mass casual fan bleedout), NHL
Hawks suckage I presume? The Hawks haven't seem to have captivated the ATL since Dominique Wilkins left the franchise.
Fans already dumping on the Braves after their big new stadium?
NHL because the Thrashers relocated and thus no home team to support?

Short: WNBA
Delist: Arena Football, NCAAWBB

Curious listings IMO.
