As expected, the future of Shocker football will be announced soon.

Doesn't necessarily need an FBS invite now

Will cost $42-47 mill to revamp Cessna Stadium and build IPF

Projected start date: 2019 or 2020

Wichita State paid a $2.5 million entrance fee to the AAC

I, as much as anyone, would love for Wichita State to restart football (along with Fullerton, Long Beach, Arlington, Pacific, etc.) but the first article you linked, the main one about the sport, is a year old. The second article, which is current, just mainly talks about the logistics of Wichita State joining the American and only states that any FBS football program has been ruled out by the university president in the "foreseeable future".

If Wichita voted to become FBS in football without the American's blessing, they might get kicked out of the league altogether.
The title of this thread is completely bogus. It should be changed to "Wichita St pays $2.5M to join American, and agrees to other stipulations", in regards to the second link (the OP is irrelevant and over a year old).

About that second link ..... 04-jawdrop Holy cow, the American raked Wichita over the coals!!

Quote:Wichita State will also pay $41,400 annually into the American’s reserve fund for five years, as other conference members did at the time of their membership.

- The contract refers to Wichita State as a “Basketball/Olympic Sports-only Member.” WSU is required to maintain its current roster of 15 sports.

- Should WSU decide to add football at the Football Bowl Subdivision — a move ruled out in the foreseeable future by university president John Bardo — it will not compete in the American unless approved by conference members. The conference must be notified at least one year in advance should WSU want to add sports to compete in the American other than football.

- WSU transfers the ability to represent its media rights to the American on July 1, except for the remainder of the local television package with Cox Kansas. WSU’s contract with Cox Kansas expires after the 2017-18 season.

- Wichita State will not share in previous NCAA Tournament basketball revenue earned by conference members.

- Wichita State’s share of conference payments from media rights and sponsorship revenues is also limited because it does not sponsor football. In its fourth year of membership, it will receive $250,000 annually, money designed to help WSU recover from losing its share of NCAA Tournament revenue earned as a Missouri Valley Conference school and forfeited by leaving the MVC.

WSU estimates the move to the American will cost it around $1 million in money lost from MVC revenues, the majority of that coming from NCAA Tournament victories. Those annual distributions account for the bulk of WSU’s money — in 2015-16 it received $769,402 in gross NCAA Tournament revenue from the MVC to account for its three NCAA games.

- WSU, as are all American members, is eligible for a $650,000 bonus for making the men’s Final Four and $300,000 for making the women’s Final Four.
"IF" Wichita is serious about re-starting FB, now would not be a bad time. Re-start the program at a lower level than FBS and get the program and success moving in another conference where the start up would not be as expensive. Build the program and invest in the facilities over the next several years and just get ready for the next realignment cycle. If the AAC loses all sports members in any future alignment the FB program would be ready to make its move to FBS then if the invite came from the AAC. If it didn't they could just leave the program in the FCS division until another realignment opportunity would come along again. If the BB program is as successful in the AAC as many think it will be, then Wichita will gain leverage for FB inclusion in the future if openings become available down the road.

Too many people want instant success and want their demands met immediately. Start small and build on success for the future and be ready for the golden opportunity when it comes. Earn the spot don't just demand it as a current member. I really don't think re-starting FB at a lower level is a bad idea at this time if the school is serious about building a successful program and paying its dues as the program climbs the ladder to potential future FBS inclusion. Striking while the iron is hot may not be a bad idea with future conference alignment up in the air again around 2025 when a lot of GOR's are up in the P5 conferences, and new TV contracts and bowl contracts come up again. 04-jawdrop 03-shhhh 01-lauramac2 04-rock 03-idea 04-bow 05-mafia 07-coffee3 04-cheers
Doubt it. The AAC isn't going to allow a start up football program anyway. That would be the death of this conference. No start ups.

Think about the state of Kansas college football.

K-State is pretty good but it's all be under one coach.

Kansas is god awful terrible and they play in a P5 conference.

Wichita State doesn't have strong prospects in FBS because of its remote location and lack of in-state players.
Is Kansas really much different than Nebraska, when it comes to in-state talent? There are some, not a ton, but some.

Frankly, its almost impossible to just choose to go FBS with no conference invite. But, if they were somehow able to do it, I dont think the AAC would be that harsh. Officially, Wichita would simply just be on their own when it came to football scheduling, football TV coverage, or bowl agreements. My guess is that by that time there would be some personal relationships formed by AD's and presidents. That still wouldn't get Wichita's start up football program an AAC football invite, but it would probably help get them some AAC games to aid in scheduling. There would be no official scheduling agreement---just individual schools helping out with an OOC game here and there of thier own free will.

That said, its all academic. There is no Wichita football program coming anytime soon.
I agree starting WSU football sooner than later would be a good idea. It should be able to follow the model of USF and go straight to FBS independent. Liberty provided the waiver path. WSU gets to full scholarship faster. Imagine AAC would help scheduling. AAC has WSU ready as either possible replacement if team leaves or expansion option. Say bring Army as FO and WSU as full in the future. Problem, to many people rarely look at the long term options for success.

Liberty got a waiver because they would win in court. Liberty clearly had adequate financial and fan support to qualify for FBS. Nobody could really argue that. Liberty's problem was they were being shunned by FBS conferences because their religous beliefs were too extreme for the most conference and schools. Had they challenged the NCAA rule---they likely would have won on the basis of religious discrimination. Very few schools have the financial resources of Liberty plus the religious argument of Liberty. The Liberty waiver path isn't likely to be available to public schools like Wichita.

Wichita would probably have to begin life as an FCS program--unless something happened to create an opening for them in CUSA or the SB. Then, depending on how the next AAC tV deal played out, there might be an issue of staying in the AAC (as it pays better) or going all sports to another conference for less money in order to move to FBS.

Yes Nebraska only has one FBS team in the state. Kansas woiuld have 3
Nebraska also made a living out of harvesting recruits from other places.

Right ...........
Kansas might not have high school recruits but it does have one of the best JUCO football recruiting conferences in the country.
Made a mistake on the first article. Believe the Shockers will start fb once they are in the AAC. Starting before would be looked on as beligerent. With the status of the B12 coming down in the mid 2020s, think Wichita and the Kochs are just waiting for the right time. It may be several years to move up to FBS. Wichita St sees itself as being in Iowa States and K States league in ten years.

Ask ur self,
is WSU willing to “invest” $400 Million +
Just to restart their f-ball program
to just bring it up to AAC level?
(@ least 6-8 yr to develope)

U think, the WSU Alumni’s & Athl Dept
could put $400 million + to better use
& for more profitable ventures

There is no P5 f-ball opportunity for WSU in the future
& w/ the very real possibility
that future college f-ball TV revenue could flatline on earnings
as well as decrease in total revenues & ratings
I seriously doubt the Koch Broths
(none of them graduated from WSU)
will put that much $$$$ @ risk
as compared to putting up half of that amount
& increasing WSU B-ball stadium by another 6-8K
& getting almost immediate benefit from such a venture.

The potential religious discrimination angle may have helped Liberty somewhat, but I'd bet any school that has the means to play FBS football and the will to put up a fight in court would get the same waiver. The NCAA holds a terrible hand in court with the conference invite rule and they know it.

But, Liberty is likely the only school with the combination of desire, means, and don't-give-a-damn-about-minding-your-manners outlook to try it.
