If you're gonna blow it up...BLOW IT UP!
Trade #1 – Mike Conley & Chandler Parsons
The Memphis Grizzlies trade G Mike Conley and F Chandler Parsons to the Utah Jazz for Joe Johnson, Alec Burks, Dante Exum, Utah 2021 1st Rd. and OKC 2018 1st Rd. (Lottery Protected)
Why the Grizzlies would do this:
Maybe the biggest benefit of this trade is shedding Chandler Parson’s terrible contract, which would be a requirement tied to any trade involving Mike or Marc. That being said, not many teams have cap space to make that happen. Utah should be able to make this work. They’re also a competitive team, which would serve as a parting gesture of appreciation to Mike for being such a consummate professional during his long career here.
In addition, Memphis gets multiple 1st Round picks, which will likely end up being between picks 15-20, to jumpstart a rebuild. They also add 2 former lottery picks in Exum and Burks. Neither has done much in their short NBA careers, but they are both young and have tenable contract situations. To make the cap situation work, they also add Joe Johnson’s expiring contract.
Why the Jazz would do this:
The Jazz are likely losing Gordan Heyward to the Celtics this off-season. They may also lose George Hill. Losing 2 starters after making the playoffs for the first time in years is less than ideal. This trade would allow the Jazz to remain competitive in the West. They don’t lose Gobert, Favors, or Hood in this deal and upgrade at PG. They’d need to decline Boris Diaw’s $7.5M Team option (which they would do regardless) but they should have the cap space to accommodate both incoming contracts.
Trade #2 – Marc Gasol & Troy Daniels
The Memphis Grizzlies trade C Marc Gasol and G Troy Daniels to the New York Knicks for Kristaps Porzingis, Joakim Noah, and New York 2019 2nd Rd. (most likely from HOU)
Why the Grizzlies would do this:
Kristaps Porzingis.
Why the Knicks would do this:
Phil Jackson has made it known that the team is willing to part ways with its 21-year old star. Marc Gasol fits the triangle offense and the Knicks shed Joakim Noah’s awful contract (similar to what the Grizzlies were able to do with Parsons in the previous trade).
Trade #3 – Brandan Wright & James Ennis
The Memphis Grizzlies trade C Brandan Wright and F James Ennis to the Orlando Magic for G Mario Hezonja and Orlando 2019 2nd Rd.
Why the Grizzlies would do this:
Grizz get younger and add what should be a high 2nd Round pick in the process.
Why the Magic would do this:
Mario Hezonja hasn’t worked out in Orlando after being a high draft pick. They get 2 veterans that can help a young team, plus they’re both on expiring contracts.
Looking on the bright side: We have a young franchise player and a ton of cap space. Lots of contract flexibility (minus Noah). Young team, average age is 24 and that's with Vince (who I kept around to mentor the young guys). We have 13 draft picks in the next 4 years (5 in the 1st Round).
Thoughts? I tried to be realistic.
