Boxing is in trouble and that's why we are seeing prime time fights on CBS (Keith Thurman) and Fox. This is an attempt to save the sport. Good move.

So---here is my theory on that. PPV is profitable in the short run---but destroys a sport in the long run. Here's why.

PPV wrings max dollars out of a rabid fan base---but in doing so, it takes the sport out of the sight line of the general public. Young kids growing up, unless raised in a home that buys the fights, don't really ever really see the events and don't get hooked on the sport. The reality is the vast majority of the next generation following a switch to PPV, dont see the events and never become future fans.

Its a good way to destroy a sport in one generation.

Boxing is going to have to go back to TV...doubt it ever becomes as popular as it was even just 25 years ago.

Boxing and Horse Racing were huge back in the 1950's...neither will ever regain that status.

Recall that Al Haymon is buying the airtime for his Cards. $20M worth, to air the first 20 cards of the PBC across FS1/FOX, CBS, and NBC/SN in 2014-15.

I wouldn't be shocked if Top Rank bought the airtime and will sell the ads themselves as opposed to go the PPV route, especially as the card is from Australia.

Yep, boxing is invisible to me unless it's extremely hyped up like Floyd Mayweather's fights.

Its very similar to what MLB did to itself when they went to cable, they lost "urban" viewership and never got it back.

Eh, I'd say they lost the urban audience because everyone started playing baseball and basketball. It's not as if the NBA and NFL are on basic TV that much more often than MLB.
