Chronicle: OEIG report: NIU mismanaged by Baker

Mismanaged is an understatement. He gave a well over $400k "job" with the title of "turnaround consultant" to a friend of his, among other sins.

Here's the Full OEIG report

Reading the report it seems pretty clear that NIU staff knew the right way to do things, but Baker is a raging pain in the ass, who put them in the position of having to break rules to satisfy him.

Baker has to go.

Not sure if you know this, but giving high paying and distinguished jobs to your unqualified buddies who have zero business being in that role is all the rage in America now.

But we can still be outraged and demand change.

I agree, but to my point, given that American's don't care at all about that, why would people at NIU? Unless of course they are *GASP* hypocrites.
On a related note...this just in regarding Matt Streb:

It has been an great experience being @NIUFacAthRep. I will miss it, but time to retire the handle. I start as @NIUChiefofStaff tomorrow.

That is a good thing IMO. Not sure what that role entails, but I like Matt Streb, not only as a professor, but as an NIU advocate.
Nothing good came out of our association with Idaho U.
Quote:NIU's Board of Trustees, too, issued a statement saying the proper actions have been taken.

Now? ppppssssfffttt. its what our great country has been operating on from the beginning. heck, human existence is built on the coat tails of our more experienced and deserving friends/siblings/long-lost 3rd cousins.
This sort of hiring is rampant at governmental agencies. Hiring and procurement rules are circumvented all the time.

Let me just make one minor change.
That is why CEO's of companies report to a Board of Directors, and the President of NIU reports to a Board of Trustees. Usually folks in these positions are given the leeway to hire friends, etc as consultants/quasi-employees. If they achieve results, no questions are asked. If they fail, the "circumventing of the rules" are used as the grounds to fire them. Such cronyism has been occurring for centuries on every corner of the earth. No doubt it will continue long after we are all gone.
To get back to the point, I don't think anyone should be please by this report. We should demand more from the leader of our university. But in no way am I surprised.
This does not look good. And, believing in consequences, I have to ask, what is the consequence to Baker. I don't think the actions described can be justified, and I am a strong opponent of paying for a wrong-doer's counsel! In my book, the Board should do something. Something swift and significant. Yet this seems to go totally under the radar?
Baker failed NIU when they needed strong leadership the most. He needs to go.
I always thought the culture at NIU was to do it the "Right Way".
So what did we get for $400,00? Show me the data. Increase enrollment?
Spent a million dollars on 4 employees.
Thank goodness FSU agreed to send us to slaughter for 2.5 million.
Baker: Make some calls and ask alumni for more money.
If he doesn't get fired this university is done.

These kind of Chicken Little, "the sky is falling" pronouncements always crack me up. This great University has been around for 122 years--it ain't going nowhere and is nowhere near done.

I don't believe the university will be done, but he does need to go. This type of trash will see no donations come from me until cleaned up.
