Lots of bandwagon fans here that can't see the program beyond Calipari's years & despite their denials will not be able to be real fans of the program unless Calipari level success is the routine. Memphis is a top 25-30 program, not the top program in the country & although real fans have hopes we win the national title every year, we don't denigrate the program & everything about it endlessly when we don't. Just remember if we are a top 25 program on average over the last 70 years, it means (for those who love to quote stats) we will have periods that are not top 25 & years when we exceed our avg. Point is, I'm a Memphis fan in the good years & the bad. I've been a season ticket holder for many years in FB & BB - and as such, find the constant criticism of the program & the administration not an attribute becoming of real fans. Sure, I'm critical at times & I have communicated that to the university presidents, the ADs & the head coaches (FB & BB). I am confident that such an approach is much more productive & less detrimental to the Memphis athletic programs than a constant barrage of public criticism on forums such as this. If you want recruits to come to our program, encourage them & promote the program. If not, just keep up the constant criticism.

There are a couple of statements that just really irk me... The whole "Cal year" crap is one of them. For someone who claims to be a fan of the program you do realize we have had success when Cal was NOT here as well? That is such a terrible argument. Anyone I talk to on a regular basis, and even see on this message board pretty much claim to have the same expectations which generally falls into "a Sweet 16 run" every 3-5 years. So when people start that "if we don't win championships every year" I know they are full of hyperbole and just trying to stir the pot.

Calipari wasn't the only coach to take Memphis to a Final Four. Calipari was not the only coach to take Memphis to an Elite Eight. Calipari wasn't the only coach to take Memphis to a Sweet 16. So on and so forth. If you want to defend Tubby, go for it, but don't act like Memphis was and is crap without Calipari.

On avg Memphis is a top 25-30 program historically. Yes we've had some great years apart from Calipari (my point) - and some not so great years - that's how we get to the top 25 program ON AVERAGE. That means we do have a good history apart from Calipari years. Your response, however, completely misses the mark in response to what I wrote or you'd rather just give a knee-jerk response than address what was said.
Tubby is so wise he got a job at a school willing to guarantee him $15 million where he doesn't have to recruit aggressively or even the homegrown talent. He gets a nice 6 figure position for his son, and can buy real estate for an inexpensive amount while being closer to his family.

We've never had success like those years, and will likely never again. It was an amazing run, no doubt about it. Now we're just seen as a non power 5 school in an average basketball conference. We've lost our luster. When we are forced to hire a parent to land local kids, there is a problem.
We've got some great things going for us. We do have history, have great facilities and play in an NBA arena. But, most of these kids were about 10 years old the last time we made a serious run.
While I'd like to see us turn it around in a big way, I am also realistic. I think we needed a program reboot, and we'll see if Tubby can turn it around. I'm looking to the 2018 class. If he swings and misses, it's probably time to start looking at replacements. His buyout would be more reasonable.
Some of you people see us as Tubby lovers. That's not the case. But he is our coach for the foreseeable future and his success (or lack of success) directly correlates into the success of my favorite team. A school I actually graduated from (not just decided to be a bandwagon fan). If Tubby can't get it done, I hope they find the money to replace him. I hope that's not the case.
In the meantime, I'm not going to demean Memphis recruits. They do read these boards, and I'm not sure I'd want to come here either after reading some of these posts. But it's a free country so if that's your thing, go for it.

The word that sticks out to me is "denigrate"! We have a handful here that denigrates daily. Sad but true. Some also make false statements that at best are asinine. Such as Tubby only took the job here so Saul could get and have a job.
He seems even wiser when you consider how unrealistic our expectations are of the program.

The main point from the OP is dead on accurate. We have some posters that denigrate the coach and players that have signed and players we are recruiting. It's a sad fact. And technically I did the same with josh. But to my credit I didn't do it five minutes after he was hired because I didn't like the hire. I gave him a chance and he failed.

In the entire history of Tiger basketball. Cal took the team to four sweet 16 and all his in last 4 years. Kirk took the team to 4 sweet 16s. and ALL the other coaches COMBINED took the team to 3 Sweet 16s.

Yes and no we can have those first five years again. But we will never see the last four again. Cal only won 2 out of every 3 games his first five years.
Too many look at his final four years and superimpose it onto his entire time here. Before the prep school squad we really were not making a lot of noise nationally under Cal.
