That is sad, FT. I recall Hall being pressed into QB service and coming up big- he was a few years after my UT stay but I saw him play a number of times in both football and baseball.
Hmmm- just noticed the date- 3 years ago-surprised I didn't hear about this. A good friend of mine played with him.
In the late 70s and early 80s I fondly remember the QB combination of Mo Hall and Mark Staples under Coach Stobart. Those teams of 1979 and 1981 were fun to watch. RIP Mr Hall.
He was a great option QB. I think Jim Kelso replaced him when he went down with a knee. I was a kid but those were exciting teams.

As I recall Maurice Hall started most of his junior year but as you note Kelso came in after Hall was injured and then held onto the job until the last (or next to the last?) game of their senior season when he was injured (in the Kent State game, I think) opening up the opportunity for Mo Hall for his heroic upset (along with Tony Lee and the "kick that won the west") of a ranked San Jose team in the California Bowl.

What I find incredibly hard to believe is that if Maurice Hall were he still alive he would be looking forward to his 67 birthday in a month or so. He left us way too soon to be sure, but I still find it almost impossible to believe how much time has slipped by since he played.

you added a decade to his age. He would be 57 if still alive in July of this year.
Way too young. He was an exciting QB.

Rockets were like 24 point underdogs in that game, which at that time was unheard of for a bowl game. Unbelievable finish to that game!!

Thanks--senility is a heavy cross to bear. That really is too young.

only because it gave me a scare - I knew I had already graduated when he was still playing. Thought I had the senility and missed a lot of years of my life....or couldn't remember them going by.

My favorite memory of an ending I didn't see live. There was a Rocket BB game that evening, and the whole family had tickets. My folks liked to get to the games early to get the best parking, but we delayed as the FB game was still going on. As I recall we headed to Centennial at the end of UT's 2nd-to-last possession as we figured the game was over. When we got inside, there was a crowd of people gathered around one of the ticket takers who happened to have a radio playing the game. We joined the others just in time to hear the call of the winning FG. Huge cheers from everyone. Had to wait to watch the 11 o'clock news to find out how UT pulled out the win. Good times.
I was having dinner with my wife at Fifi's and was totally miserable- finally she said "Just go out to the car and listen to the end of it-you're driving me crazy." Raced out just in time to hear us lose the lead with seconds to go. Crushed, I turned off the radio and went back inside. A few minutes later our waiter brought our food and said "Heard you went out to hear the end of the UT game. What an amazing finish." Still mad at myself for giving up on the Rockets.
