Being reported by Buccigross. Big hire.
Amazing what 6 years away will do. Before he left for Tech he could have stepped right into the job, now he was third choice behind Granato and Montgomery.
Tech fans looked like WMU football fans there with Fleck.

Where did you see UM went after either Granato or Montgomery?
Mel was the secret to Red's success. No coincidence UM took a huge dive after Pearson left. Though there's a lot of dead wood on this team right now, they'll be back in business in a few years.

I see a much rapid upswing for UM than I do MSU.

Assuming Red was waiting to retire...which he wasn't.
Maybe now Mich will schedule H & H with WMU

True. But it was widely known that Mel was HC in waiting and he got tired of waiting so he took the Tech job.

As always with these kinds of things it's just rumors as the schools would never say anything publicly; but there is a lot of talk that Granato's recent raise was due to Michigan offering him the job (or at least an interview) and supposedly Montgomery just flat out said no to even talking to them.

I worked in athletics when Pearson left UM to coach at MTU. The rumor at that time was that Dave Brandon was really putting an emphasis on hiring the best candidate for any head coach opening and that he put a lot of emphasis on his coaches having experience as a head coach. Some believed that since Pearson had not been a head coach, he was advised to take a head coaching job to show that he could be successful because some believed that he may not be hired once Red retired.

It will be interesting to see what he can do to turn things around. I have to imagine Powers stays on as an assistant as him and Pearson coached with Red forever.
