As LU transitions towards FBS, the initial FB scheduling one can expect the initial scheduling to be tougher than after several years. During the next 10 years, who will be LU's biggest rival game.
Given the options, I voted UMass as our biggest rival. I probably should have put other and said New Mexico State but the same logic applies: ODU, Coastal Carolina, and App State will likely be only two games within that ten year period (if that). Maybe even four games for ODU or Coastal. But UMass and NMSU will have more holes in their schedule as fellow independents and will provide a much greater opportunity to build a rivalry. It's too bad we won't have a conference title to fight over but we can still fight for bowl eligibility and if we're on the edge at the end of a season then a game against UMass/NMSU could determine whether we're in or out.

Coastal has provided us with a decent rivalry over the years and I'd like for it to continue but I realize that is unlikely to be annual. ODU would be great as an in-state rival but they are already building up rivals that they can also face in other sports.

I did consider adding NMSU but did not due to their distance from Lynchburg. The thought being that in the next 10 years, a local fan base traveling from Boone or the Va SC coast could stimulate a rivalry. I should have added Charlotte to the poll as I believe they also striving like LU to become FBS relevant.

Thinking ODU would be most likely candidate for a LU rival, I checked the ODU board to see what team was their biggest rival. Consensus is CUSA has done a poor job in creating rivalry games with inconsistent scheduling. At least the BSC had LU/Coastal at the marquee match up as he last game of the year and that proved worthy with the last several games determining who went to the playoffs. This year the BSC has LU/CSU in the finale. The constant on the ODU board is that they don't have a clear cut FBS rival to anything approaches their JMU FCS games of the past.

JMU and ODU were only playing FB in the same conference for the 2011 and 2012 seasons. That is not any time for anything called a rivalry to form.

Agreed. And I was surprised to read on the ODU board when some listed JMU as their best rival. Nothing will stimulate a home fan base than to have a visiting team with a strong traveling base come in and be loud and beat the home team. This is likely a scheduling weakness in the CUSA.

The term rivalry is throw around a lot on CSN but I really think its being forced. If a rivalry is to form it will.
Come on! We all know Liberty's biggest rival is the Devil. Given that tidbit of truth our rival should be Duke, Arizona St., DePaul, and Wake...... and of course Mississippi Valley St.
Well played, army!
