Since CP hasn't come up for air from the morality pool he's swimming in and posting what are rivals say (of course they are going to make fun!), this is what people that know basketball and the person are saying. Link is to thread on Scout Aggie Alert site:

Yep it's an absolutely fantastic hire. With the little money they can offer they really got a steal and someone of Jans caliber NMSU wouldn't have gotten but for the incident. They are getting a guy who should have a P5 job by now. I hope CSUB will get someone of Jans caliber when Barnes inevitably leaves for a bigger job (which I have come to accept he really deserves it).
Drink deep from the pitcher of Crimson Kool-aid, my friends! Haha...

I know it will be hard for Aggie fans to do (We'll, maybe just Frank & dancing), but can you reflect for just a moment on what you would be saying about Jans if it was GCU who lost Majerle & made the exact same hire? Is he still the guy who is a "mastermind of Xs & Os" who is entitled to a second chance?

I get that he is your guy now, so you have no choice but to make peace with it. Just know that to the rest of us, he's just another coach with only 1 season of D1 coaching with a lot still to prove. I wish him the best, but might hold off on anointing him the second-coming of Lou Henson.

(...plus, that guy is now at UNM & went from a basketball genius to below average coach who did it with MM's players in the span of a week.)

Not my job to post everything about NMSU. I have been surprised by the lack of Aggie Fan posts on here about the Jans hiring.

Majerle has probably done more fornicating and @ss slapping than Jans could even dream of! MMMMMmmm. Yummy. That crimson koolaid is delicious!
Who is talking about ass slapping in this thread, other than you?
I think that it is a good hire, but I am not jumping for joy.

NMSU will be able to probably double the salary for our head coach after the 2021 season once we pay off the $4.3 million in debt we still owe for a long we took out years ago. I believe we pay around 1.3 million a year from the athletic department budget toward that debt, so once it's paid, a big chunk of that money will go to pay our coaches better.
Yup, pretty much a million dollars of athletic revenue being generated goes to payoff what is left of a 10 million dollar loan. NMSU still has 4.3 million left to be paid over the next four years. Once that is done, it should free up some cash flow for the athletic department. At that point, if Jans is still around, he can negotiate for a noticeably larger base salary. And if Jans can resurrect the Pan American crowd like he is resurrecting his coaching career, he will only add more to NMSU's athletic budget to fill his pockets.
I don't think people in Las Cruces care that much to put it bluntly. NMSU had the 2nd longest win streak in the country and people still didn't show up. Most games weren't even 50% full. If a 20 game win streak can't get people to come out not much else will. Don't mean to offend anyone. I just doubt the Pan Am will ever regularly sell out again.

I'm all in on the Jans hire and super excited about him. But I hate to admit you are right on all your points. Totally hit the nail on the head. We are just delusional fans as fickle as the changing winds. Go Aggies!!

People keep blathering including our AD that people don't show up but we averaged over 5000 a game. That puts us right there with the rest of the MWC for attendance. It's not great but its not as gloom and doom as other places. People are coming. We should be averaging around 8000 for a good mid major program like NMSU.

I have to give it to you. You nailed it on this post. Well done!

We also need a head coach who will get people in Las Cruces excited about Aggie basketball. I don't think Weir was successful in getting people to buy into his program. He thought all he had to do was win, and when no one showed, he threw a fit like a 2 year old toddler.

I still believe Paul Weir, "the Traitor", is a very good coach. My disdain for him now has more to do with his leaving NMSU, his players, and the Aggie fans in the lurch after just ONE season to take a job with our in state RIVALS. I knew Weir would raise NMSU's program. He is innovative and driven. You don't get multiple degrees and close to finish a PhD if you're not. It is not a question of coaching with Weir but more a question of character for my quick turn against him.

However, I do think Chris Jans is a better X&Os coach than Weir; by reputation and results at Wichita State... a very discipline hard nosed team. I know Gregg Marshall is the architect of the Wheat Shockers but Jans played a major role behind the scenes. I only compare Jans to Henson because like Henson, Jans sweats the little details on the court. As Jans puts it, we're going to play HARD and SMART.

The next box Jans' needs to check is can he recruit at the same level or better than our last three coaches... Theus, Menzies, and Weir.
Steve Forbes, like Jans, was a Marshall Shocker assistant and he's already building ETSU into one of the better mid majors in the country. ETSU was a 13(!) seed this year.

I believe Jans was the best coach NMSU could've obtained and better than Weir. I predict Pistol Pete will fluctuate between 30-80 RPI under him and win an NCAA Tourney game.
