Of course, I say "HELL NAW!!!" to all these merger proposals because I like the Belt the way it is. We've got serious rivalries unlike C-USA (just for an example) and a fairly tight footprint.

Of course, while we busy responding to the proposals brought up by Harry Minium already in another thread, here comes Matt Brown of SB*Nation, applauding Harry's piece while piggybacking off of it and offering his own ideas on a Belt-C-USA merger (NO THANKS!!!)...

The most interesting conference realignment suggestion for now comes from Harry Minium of The Virginian-Pilot, echoing an earlier suggestion from Patrick McGhee of the Sun Herald.

The idea? It’s time for Conference USA and the Sun Belt to think about some sort of merger. A consolidation of two Group of 5 conferences could address two major problems.

McGhee proposed a sprawling, 28-team megaconference, bringing in C-USA, Sun Belt, and a few FCS programs, like James Madison and Sam Houston State. The WAC might have taught us that it can be logistically difficult to run a 16-team-plus conference, but erring on the side of practicality isn’t fun, and if non-power football should be anything, it should be fun. ..." GS could benefit from more Florida exposure for recruiting. Pepper in some South Florida and Central Florida home and homes with Gag state and CrAppy and I'm good. Anything short of that and I'm out though the 4 game playoff could be fun.
Hail Naw.
F*** CUSA. They built that house, let them live in it. I dint feel bad for them, and the last schools we should throw a life line to should be the defectors.

I like our line up, even GaSt at this point. I understand TxSt want to be in a conference with other Teaxs schools, but I think everyone else is good, geographically.

It's our responsibility to build the SBC, not save CUSA. We need to just concentrate on ourselves, not worry about the foundation of their house.

A merger is the worst idea ever.

I agree. Why would want to have anything to do with CUSA mess. Our schools are happy...CUSA Not at all. Those junkers would just bring that attitude with them. Let 'em rot! They made that mess. No need to bail them out.
SBC invites MT, WKU, MU, ODU, CHAR, FIU and FAU

CUSA invites NMSU, TSU, LA, stAte and USA

I'm guessing ULM will try to hang on for as long as they can, but the added travel will eventually force them to go back to the SLC.

End result....

CUSA WEST

New Mexico State
UTEP
UTSA
Texas State
Rice
North Texas

CUSA EAST

Louisiana
Louisiana Tech
Southern Miss
South Alabama
UAB
Arkansas State

SBC NORTH

Middle Tennessee
Western Kentucky
Marshall
Old Dominion
Appalachian State
Charlotte

SBC SOUTH

Troy
Georgia State
Georgia Southern
Coastal Carolina
FAU
FIU

Autobids stay intact.

CFB Playoff money stays intact.

No need for special permissions from the NCAA.

Someone want to explain to me how this is not much better than the current alignment?

I must admit, I would not be able to say no to that CUSA East lineup.

That looks awful from my view as a Coastal fan. SBC North looks incredible. SBC south would only have 2 teams that I would feel any excitement in playing whatsoever.

Hard Pass! They made their mess, it's not our problem now.

You had a few labels and schools out of place. I fixed it for you.
I feel like the notion Texas State wants to be in a conference with other Texas schools is over stated. It would be nice don't get me wrong but were not going to go out of our way to make it happen. Rice and UTSA are really the only two Texan CUSA schools that I would like to be conference mates with so I if anything I would rather have them join us in the belt. Good luck convincing them to come before disaster but if their ship starts sinking they would be good additions.
Here's how I would split it up, but still remain opposed to it

SBC West

Rice
La Tech
UTEP
Tx State
UNT
UTSA

SBC East

USA
Troy
USM
ULL
ULM
Ark State

CUSA East

CCU
UNCC
Ga State
Ga Southern
ODU
App

CUSA West

FIU
FAU
MTSU
WKU
Marshall
UAB

UTA and UALR stay in the Sun Belt.

---

La Tech can go screw themselves with their demands about ULM. They aren't in control of this.
If Texas State wants to go to CUSA, let's just swap them out for Southern Miss and be done with it. 04-cheers
You cant merge unless the P5's agree to give us more than 10M per conference which it is capped at now and is why inpart Idaho and NMSU got the boot.

Realign regionally save money get to go to more away games and have more opposing fans fill your stadium...seems pretty straight forward to me. We have a rivalry with App on history and GSU due to location, as long as those two stay I really dont care who else is in the conference as I am sure it will all balance out.

We are no better off than they are and USA would have jumped as well. Said is before they slid back to the Belt more than we caught them. Lets all get off our high horses.

Switching teams around would be beneficial overall to both conferences and no saving one at the sacrifice of the other. A straight merge I oppose to many teams and not enough money.

FAU and FIU really screws this up for GS they are so far south from all other SE teams.

No. I didn't.

The whole reason this is being brought up right now is precisely because travel is becoming such a drag on finances that it can be no longer excused away in these far flung conferences.

There is no point to reshuffling if the end result is still 2 far-flung conferences.

Every day that we do not reorganize into the most regionally distinct groupings we can is another day that we flush money down the toilet. All of us. SBC and CUSA.

This is inexcusable in today's ever decreasing state budgets and ever decreasing TV revenue.

It's not like you'll never play those guys. You'll play them in every sport, every year, just maybe not as much as the teams in you division. I mean, they'll still be in your conference.

As it stands now, the only school from that SBC North you'll play is App. Seems to me that this "new" SBC is a better deal given your previous statement.
The Financial issues of several CUSA schools are not our problem.
