Glad to see this guy leave the CAA. He was a heck of a coach, turning UNCW around immediately and making them a NCAA tournament team. Question for you all on the boards is: Will Keatts take some of his players (Bryce and Cacok in particular) with him?

Keatts got a 6 year deal a worth 2.2 mil/year ... quite a bit of loot and huge jump in salary ... not many people are gonna turn that down.
Oh good, another thread discussing Keatts leaving UNCW. :)

But the real question is do y'all love what we think about y'all?
Boy, that was quick....wonder how long had that deal had been in place just waiting for the season to end ? UNCW is a good job for a young person with upward movement aspirations and I mean that as a compliment.

I enjoy every single one of ya, even when I'm dropping a smartass comment over on our boards. I genuinely am rooting for y'all, as long as it's not at the expense of UNCW. The way things look right now though, it's CofC's conference next year unless UNCW can maintain stability and not lose recruits.
It's going to be interesting to watch the coaching carousel turn. VCU Coach Wade took the LSU job. Unless they go outside the system, with his havok roots, I'm guessing Jamion Christian is the obvious replacement.

May bring Mike Rhoades back home from Rice.

Would they ever try to go back to Anthony Grant again?

Agree on Christian, btw.

While he is a possibility because of his Shaka/VCU roots, IMO, it would be a hard sale to the fan base bringing in a coach that was a middle of the road finisher in Conference USA. Jamion shares those same roots and is coming off his best season as a head coach. Much easier sell.
VCU, no matter how successful their teams and how much money they pay their coach, has to realize that any coach they hire looks upon the VCU job as just a way-station on to a Power Five conference
head coaching position.

Their rabid fandom, now having to hire a fourth head coach in less than a decade, is slowly beginning to understand this (see their boards) and, of course, is terribly disillusioned about this fact.
And, of course, their incoming freshman class may scatter in the wind of his sudden departure.

Wade lasted two years before taking the golden purse at LSU...and add insult to injury, never told his players about it--they learned from media reports and he never said goodbye. He, obviously, cared nothing about VCU as a college or his players as more than the instruments to move ahead...just used both as stepping stones.

Yes, we ache to make the NCAAs...but it makes me very happy to have coaches like Shaver and Laycock and others in other sports, who stay at W&M because they love the College, it's goals,
its academic integrity, and the kind of young men and women who they coach.
If Jamion Christian goes to VCU, wonder if we can get Tony to schedule a game or two with his former assistant, maybe even get them to come to the Kap. Austin Shaver might have even been a GA at VCU at the same time Jamion was there as an assistant.

I know there are lots of mixed feelings about VCU but I don't think it hurts at all and only helps to play a Top 25-50 team that is only an hour away and would definitely help our RPI. Plus it would be fun to beat them :).
I wish Shaver would use us as a stepping stone and move on after 2 NCAAT appearances. I'd bode him a fond farewell if he did that.

John Brannen, coach at Northern Kentucky, is also a hot name, with VCU roots, right now.

I don't know. He won 23 games this season, in his third year. That's only been done at Rice once before. They haven't made an NCAA tournament appearance in 47 years. Rice only won 7 games the year before he took over, and 5 games the year before that. I think he's done a great job to get them to 23 wins by his third year. The question will be whether he can sustain it and whether they can make it back to the dance.

Let me add that I wasn't necessarily sold on Will Wade as a coach, but there was no denying the talent that they had coming in. That would've sustained the level of play alone, I'd imagine. It will be interesting to see how it plays out.

Ha this take is amazing. If a WM coach had anything remotely approaching the success that VCU coaches have had, they'd be moving on up too. That's what a successful program that's not a top-15 head coaching looks like. VCU is pretty much the model for a mid-major.
Will Wade is not Shaka Smart regarding player and fan warm and fuzzies. If they have a quick and good hire, I think most of their #21 ranked recruiting class will stay, unlike when Smart left. Their fan base, practice facility and program recognition is still there, and next year will have plenty of playing time available for incoming freshmen. Not feeling sorry for VCU.

Gary Parrish of CBS reporting that Mike Rhoades is in advanced talks with VCU to be the next head coach at VCU.

His Wikipedia page has already been changed to reflect that he has the job... not that it counts for much.
