Illinois State
Who I came to say! They got JOBBED! I'd switch them with Wake.
Monmouth.
Right on. Lost 2 games all year when healthy (I love how this is an excuse for P5's but completely sealed for midmajors). 6 losses total, top 10 kenpom defense, 17-1 in MVC. Switch Illinois St with Kansas St. KSU went 2 games below .500 in BXII. You can make an exception for sub-.500 if something extraordinary happened non-conference to make up for it. KSU's noncon SOS was an extraordinary......228!

Anyone else notice how the top 4 midmajors (Wichita/Saint Mary's/VCU/Dayton) all got matched up to play each other Round 1? Must be magic.
Illinois State, and the committee needs to knock off some this rubbish when they dig into the 50's or higher for some of these schools.

The same RPI that thinks well of Vandy and it's garbage record thought high of ISU. The SOS thing is such a double-dip and it clearly favors the majors.

I really thought one of the trio of ISU, Monmouth, and UTA were gonna get the nod. I am concerned with the integrity of the committee. Not only going nuts on their own, but seeding everyone else like crud? Wow, how big of you to give Gonzaga a top line... why on earth is SMU a 6?

If it isn't obvious by now this is a cash grab, and that non-majors don't have a spot here...

This might be the most self-serving committee rotation yet.

The 7 seeds: 2 from Power 6 conferences and 2 from elsewhere.

Ditto for the 10 seeds.

The odds of the 7/10 match-ups being the way they were if you had a completely random draw (2 Power 6 match-ups and 2 non-Power 6 match-ups)?

1 in 6.

Not quite the same odds as a meteor hitting your house, but it's definitely suspicious.
Vanderbilt gets a 9 seed with an RPI of 38...
MTSU gets a 12 seed with an RPI of 35...

Vanderbilt lost to MTSU 71-48!!!!
Vandy was way overseeded.

This...but actually a 12 seed is a good spot to advance...I think a 10 or 11 seed are even better. MTSU IMHO was probably a 12...but so was Vandy.

I thought there was some rule (possibly unwritten) that they try to arrange the bracket so teams from the same conference don't meet in the first two rounds?
Wolfman: before realignment that was indeed an explicit rule.

Arlington was blown out by the team that lost the SBC championship game. They didn't deserve squat.

FTR, URI stole Illinois State's bid imo. They don't go dancing without an auto-bid.
That's a shame if true. There was room for both Rhode Island and Illinois State. No need for a team below .500 in-conference with a 228 SOS out-of-conference.
Vandy got the *9 seed so the network could get a nice market share in Nashville and Chicago, plus the Big 10 / SEC thing. That's the way the whole thing is organized. The seeds are for market pairings, not for quality of wins or the season's work.

It's no different for the 4 team CFP. They look at regions of the country that could possibly be involved in watching if certain teams play. The advertising dollars are based on that. That's why the committee's seeds always flip flop at the last session.

Where there is money to be made by the corporate entities involved you will find the under belly of NCAA complicity. They both like a buck. The NCAA bankrolls about 70 million a year to endowment out of this tournament. Their holdings now are approaching 1 billion. But hey, I'm sure they are the champion of fairness in the governance of "amateur athletics."

However, to most during the year if you point out the corners of corruption into which the average fan may peer, you get labeled as a conspiracy nut.

Enjoy the first two rounds. Those are usually the only ones I watch!

BTW: If the SEC had 7 worthy schools we still wouldn't get but about 4 or 5 bids. We just don't tune in for basketball. So.....we aren't worth the extra slots.
JR...if they cared about TV market share...then Cuse would've been invited. I thought it would've helped them get in but it didn't help in our case.

With the bids to the Big East I guess they figure they had that covered. Besides every year they make an example of some schools and publicize them. It lends to the air of "fairness". But the truth is those conferences which get the most annual bids pretty well cover the basketball watching regions. The Big 12 bids fluctuate but their key brands outside of Kansas (Texas and Oklahoma) are absent. So they still covered that region nicely.

None of this is to say that schools from those conferences aren't deserving, but the deserving are usually covered in the first 3 or 4 bids that each of those conferences receive. Florida and Kentucky are the critical gets from the SEC and they are in.

After that it's about reaching niche markets, generating interest by pairing old rivals who infrequently meet, human interest stories sold to hype certain games, and making sure that schools from each region have a good chance to advance.

The longer the major regions stay involved the more money they make. And by the time you get to the Elite 8 or Final 4 it's branding that draws the largest number of viewers. Cinderella sells in the Sweet Sixteen but that's when her coach usually turns into a pumpkin.
Syracuse deserved nada. They did nothing this year outside of upstate New York.

Spot on.

.
Illinois State's resume is not string. They only played 4 opponents of note: http://goredbirds.com/schedule.aspx?path=mbball

11/14 at TCU (NIT 4 seed).. lost 71-80
01/14 Wichita State .......... won 76-62
02/04 at Wichita State ....... lost 86-45
03/05 vs Wichita State ....... lost 71-51

They caught Wichita on a bad night at home. But the return game was UGLY. And they were not able to do anything about it in the MVC Championship Game.

Like Syracuse (terrible on the road), Cal and Iowa, a #1 seed in the NIT is probably right.

Frankly their win is less impressive than BYU's over Gonzaga on 2/25 in Spokane

79-71. But they failed to press their case by getting blown out by Saint Mary's 81-50 on 3/6 in the WCC semi-final. And the WCC was considerably stronger than the MVC this year, especially the middle and bottom teams.

Monmouth's case is even worse. They did have a quality loss, 71-70 OT, to South Carolina, but got then beat by Syracuse 71-50 back in mid-November, in what were basically warm up games for all involved. After that they have not played anyone of any note. And empty resume basically.

I am not taking anything away from terrific runs in conference, but it's not like that was against ACC or even Pac12 competition.
