What a classy, classy move yesterday by Duke coach K. Such a sad thing that is happening to Jeff Capel.

If that didn't bring tears to your eyes -- I guess I don't know what will. The bond between a man and his father will always be something very special. For those of you whose father is still with you, be sure to let him know how much he means to you. You won't always have the opportunity.
I remember Capel saw me at the Scope box office about to buy tickets to the ODU game that night. He called me over and gave me 2 tickets for free.
I ended up sitting between two former ODU greats (Mark Poag and AC Carver, I think).... and his wife was nearby as well.
Pretty cool move.
Hey, Wood, Coach Capel was our head coach! How about reaching out to him and invite him to one of our remaining home games for our fan base to say thank you to him. A classy school would reach out to a former coach who, I believe, still lives in the area...
Coach Capel came into ODU during the peak of my basketball madness... I was heartbroken when Olly left, but Coach Capel provided steady leadership. Though I moved to Seattle in 1997 and didn't witness the "Downfall" of the program. I still have great fondness for Coach Jeff Capel as a good human being and a Monarch!

I wish only the best for him through his fight with ALS.
Thanks for the background. I have followed our program since the mid 1970's and Coach Capel had a nice run while he was here. Sure wish the school would do something to recognize/honor him at one of our remaining home games.
It would indeed be a good thing to do. It would take some courage on both sides to make that happen, it didn't end so well here for Jeff Capel and ODU. He is a good man. I was always impressed when you when see Jeffs whole family, his mom and dad, sitting in the stands at every home game.

Here is the article that appeared in the players tribune in case you missed it.

It's been alluded to me that this has already been done from ODU's side. If this doesn't happen, it would have been a decision from the family's end. With that said, as much as I would love to have a tribute, I also would completely understand/respect the Capel family's decision.
Sad to report that Coach Capel has passed on

May peace and strength be with the Capel family at this tough time. Coach Capel was always a class act and the Capel's are a classy family.
Very sad news indeed.
RIP, Jeff
My condolences to the family and friends of Coach Capel. I know he will be missed by everyone for a long time.
In my brief interactions with him he seemed to be a true gentleman.

RIP Coach. You were a true Gentleman in all respects.
Seems like just yesterday the news came out that he was diagnosed with ALS. What a horrible disease. It is very true that Coach Capel was the epitome of a gentleman and it seems his sons followed his example.
I was honored that he and the staff accepted my invitation each year to play golf with me. I'll never forget riding in the cart with him a couple of months after beating Villanova in 95 and hearing all the behind the scenes stories.
Great person. Great family. RIP
RIP Coach Capel. A sad day for the Monarchs family.
