Hey Blazers! I posted this on the C-USA board and got a good response from HooverBlazer (thanks!) but I was also directed to this board.

Post: #1ATTN: UAB Fans - I have a question!
Hello Blazers!

My best friend and I are making the drive to Birmingham early Saturday morning (Feb 25th) for the Deontay Wilder heavyweight fight at the BJCC that night. We will arrive a little before lunch, and are staying the night at the Courtyard Marriott by the UAB campus.

We are big craft beer guys, and would love a few suggestions on places to hit before the fight, and also after. Are there good spots for daytime drinking/people watching, and then also late night after the fight?

I see we will be near UAB's campus, rather than by the BJCC downtown. Are the bars near the baseball stadium better? Downtown? Five Points? (I googled five points but am not sure what it is)

Are there areas we need/want to avoid?

We are both 32 and married to lovely ladies - if that helps. Not looking to pick up women. Just want to enjoy some good beer, good food, a good fight, and a 24 hour break from parental duties.

Thanks in advance!
Well, there's no bars near the baseball stadium, just one brewery: Good People. It's probably the number 1 in popularity in Birmingham, hope you like IPAs.

Definitely hit up Avondale, Trim Tab, and Cahaba Brewing. Unfortunately none of those are within walking distance. Nothing, really, is within walking distance of the Courtyard which is on the medical side of the UAB campus next to the hospital. Uber is available, though, so you're still good.

BJCC area bars are very expensive and basically a tourist trap, but good quality. Five Points is the area around 20th St S and 11th/10th Ave S. It's the older night life area.

And around Avondale (41st St South & 5th Ave S area) is the newer "hipster" part of town.

My suggestions coming from a 30 year old social beer drinker:

First, I'd UBER everywhere if you're going to be drinking. Even you aren't it's just super cheap and convenient to UBER in Birmingham. Parking is always terrible.

Best nearby brewery: Good People for sure. Cahaba would be my second pick.

Best craft beer / day time or night time hang out bar: The Paramount. I'ts a sports bar / adult arcade. It's amazing. Probably the best bar food in town.

Best late night: If you're wanting a solid craft cocktail and beer option hit up Carrigan's. A little more upscale than shorts and flip flops but it's awesome.

Best food that won't be slammed on a Saturday evening/night: Anything in Lakeview - Sky Castle, On Tap, Moe's, Jack Brown's. Tons of options and all good.

Best late late night: Parkside / The Marble Ring in Avondale
I'd definitely recommend Paramount and the Collins Bar. Both are good places and they're within walking distance of each other. Also, Blue Monkey is a great bar in Five Points.

One of my favorite spots, The J. Clyde, is right next to the Blue Monkey. They have a large beer selection and some pretty tasty food. (Try the sauerkraut balls.) Personally, I'd walk to Five Points from the Courtyard Marriott if the weather was nice, but is a bit of a hill.
Avondale, 41st street pub, Avondale brewery, fancy on 5th, cahaba brewery right around the corner. All good spots.

Basically Lakeview, Avondale, and 2nd avenue north are the spots to hand out. 5 points is okay..
