It is actually amazing the record is as good as it is considering we have a 6 man team. With Garber healthy that gives us 7 bodies but Garber is only averaging 4 points per game. We might win a first round tournament game but we do not have the depth to win it all. BGSU for gosh sakes can go much deeper off the bench than UT. It is a sad commentary on recruiting when our reserves cannot even give serious quality minutes.
Yeah. I don't think there was any stifling or slowing. I think EMU just had a bad night. Glad to see the Rocket offense clicking, although they did put up 100+ on BGSUx.

I was kind of paying attention to the defenses. The Rockets seem to present like a passive, denial of access front to the key. But, once somebody gets in, the Rockets basically just watch. EMU, on the other had, actively battles to deny a shot or to get a take away. I think if the Rockets could be coached to be a little scrappier inside on defense it would make a difference. Maybe the coach is worried about fouling, though. I don't know. Just my opinion from what I noticed in that game.
We have never scrapped on D. TK must not have been a D guy in college. Its not fun coaching D. All the little drills, help and recover, how to defend screens, checking out., closing out, when to double down and who to double.... with limited practice time coaches today probably have to rely on high school coaches to have instilled D onto the college player.
We can't afford to foul with no bench, so we rely on NOT turning the ball over and making the best out of offensive possessions. You can tell in coach TK's post game interviews, he HATES turnovers.
And to the comment about BG's bench being better? Um.... they are forced to play a bad bench because their team isn't very good. Adaway would start for BG. Ali is the worst D1 pg I have ever seen. Just like when we had those Cross teams, guys get points whether they are good or not if they get minutes.
Lol. Adway would not start for BG-over Alcegair or Wiggins? No. And the worst D1 PG you've ever seen leads the MAC in assist/TO ratio and is Top Ten in assists and steals. I don't have to look back any further than Crawford? I think it was for BG or Larry Bastfeld at UT to find one worse. A number of OOC teams we played would start Ali over their current starter. But overall he's not very good by MAC standards.

I think one of the reasons we won was EMU played zone. They neutralized their quickness advantage. We are slow (overall as a team) but can pass. They played to our strength!

He's a Product of their defensive coaching and scheme. We literally have 3 PG's on our team better. He cant shoot, and has bad ball handling skills. I literally sit behind him during warmups and scream the amount of misses in a row he has in shoot around. We got to 11 3's in a row this year... and adaway is not bettter than Wiggins but he is more athletic than all of those other guys. They're deep because they dont have standouts so everyone gets minutes. They're also having trouble even staying eligible. I'd take Wiggins and maybe Denny from their team. Our top 6 plus those 2 would be all I wanted for an 8 man squad.

I guess I didn't realize that shootarounds figured into what makes a good point guard or that assists and assist/TO ratio is a product of defensive coaching and scheme. I suppose that kind of knowledge is what separates casual fans from the real basketball guys! 03-wink

Should be interesting to see what their strategy will be next time we play them.
I thought EMU looked low on energy. I've seen them play better. Of course, if they gave Thompson the ball more, ran stuff for him beyond the occasional ad lib alley oop, they would get their shooters better looks and get the opposition bigs in even more foul trouble. Their other big Steele is a really good mid range shooter but they rarely look for him. IMO if you had TK coach offense and Murphy coach D you would have a hell of a team.
